Ann Carnaby remembers… “My most vivid memory of this season is at the week that Toru Shimakawa, the set designer, who was living at my house, had his friend Giant, a very tall, also Japanese fellow visit to help out with the set for WHOREHOUSE. Until Giant arrived, Taru had eaten out all the time. Giant, however, was a chef, and there was outstanding Japanese cuisine going on in my kitchen daily. I was fascinated with Giant’s chopping and slicing technique, but what really amazed me was that each morning Giant would fry two eggs for each of them. The eggs were perfectly cooked with solid whites and soft yolks. They ate them with chopsticks, by folding the four sides of flat white over the yolk, picking up the yolk-sized package gently with their chopsticks, and putting the whole folded egg into their mouths of once! That was the only week that summer that I was awake in time for anyone’s breakfast!”
