HAMPTON — Longtime Rockingham County treasurer Edward “Sandy” Buck died this week and was remembered for his contributions to his community and the state GOP.

Buck, 71, was serving his eighth term as county treasurer when he died Monday. Locally, he was involved in numerous groups and efforts, including as chairman of the Hampton Budget Committee and the Planning Board, and as a leader on the town U.S.S. Hampton Committee. He had a background in financial management and worked for corporations including AT&T and IBM Corp.

New Hampshire Republicans remembered Buck Tuesday for his part in the state GOP. Gov. Chris Sununu called Buck a friend and a “Rockingham County icon” in a Tweet. New Hampshire GOP Chairwoman Jeanie Forrester said in a statement Buck was a dedicated community member who served his community, county and state with distinction.

Senate President Chuck Morse said Buck was a friend for many years and that Buck was “an integral part in the success of Rockingham County.”

“His service to his community over the years has certainly had a positive impact on our state. He will be missed,” Morse said in a statement Tuesday morning.

Rio Tilton, a state representative and Winnacunnet High School alum, said on Facebook he is “incredibly saddened” by Buck’s passing. Tilton’s stepfather, Jeff Brown, was part of the Rockingham County Republican Committee with Buck, and Tilton said Buck was “always the first to see how he could help.”

“Sandy truly was one of my role models in life and will be truly missed by myself and my family,” Tilton wrote in his Facebook post.

Current and former Hampton town officials remembered Buck as being dedicated to his town, as well as a kind person. He also volunteered at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival, assisted the town manager’s office as a planning consultant and served on the town’s Capital Improvement Program committee and the Hampton Academy Junior High Facilities Committee.

Selectman Rusty Bridle called Buck a “fine gentleman” who “worked tirelessly” for his community and the county.

Brian Warburton, a former selectman, was close friends with Buck and knew him as “someone who gave back so much.”

“He was always quick to offer a solution in different things. He always liked to be involved,” said Warburton. “It’s a sad day.”

Former selectman Mary-Louise Woolsey said Buck was not only a good public servant for whom she voted for each year but also a kind person.

“He was always smiling away, willing to reach a hand out. An outstanding person,” said Woolsey. “I thought a great deal of him, and I will certainly miss him.”

Visiting hours will be from 2-5 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 20 in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home – Crematory, in Hampton, according to his obituary. Services will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, at the First Congregational Church in Hampton.
