PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Jean A. (Fitzreiter) Ashfield, Ed.D., 63, of 3494 West Links Court and formerly of Hampton, died Wednesday, April 26, in her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born July 16, 1925, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of Carl and Helen (Tessmer) Fitzreiter.
Dr. Ashfield had been active in library work during her 16 years in New Hampshire and had played major roles in educational and art institutions throughout the country.
She earned her master of arts degree and her doctorate in education at Columbia University. She served in administrative capacities at San Diego State College and the California State Department of Education’s Division of Teacher Education.
During her years in New York City she was associate director of the Empire State Foundation of Independent Liberal Arts College, vice president for development and public relations for Mills College of Education, and manager of development of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She had lived in Manhattan, N.Y., Teaneck, N.J., Hampton and Palm harbor.
Dr. Ashfield published a number of papers and was the recipient of professional awards.
She was past president of the Association of New Hampshire Library Friends and past president of Friends of Lane Memorial Library in Hampton. She had been a delegate to the New Hampshire White House Conference on Library Information Services and a consultant and lecturer at the New Hampshire State Library.
The family includes her husband, William J. Ashfield of Palm harbor; two daughters, Barbara Karen Cervantes of Big Springs, Texas, and Tracy Jean Hoesly of Stratham; a stepson, William Templin of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, Carl R. Fitzreiter of Erie, Pa.; an aunt, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Erie, Pa., at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Erie, Pa.
