HAMPTON – Irving W. “Soup” Campbell, 73, of 190 Towle Farm Road, died July 9 at the Exeter Health Care Center.

Born in Manchester, Mr. Campbell was a summer resident of Hampton Beach since the age of seven. He retired in 1971 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he had worked as a machinist in Shop 31.

In 1982, Mr. Campbell was honored by the town of Hampton with “Soup” Campbell week during the first week of October.

Mr. Campbell was a member of the Rockingham Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Odlin Encampment, both of Hampton, and Ranger Lodge of the International Association of Machinists of Portsmouth.

At one time, Mr. Campbell was an active director of the Hampton Recreation Department and active in Boy Scout work. He was a former sports editor for The Hampton Union.

Family members include his wife, Mrs. Bernice (Frye) Campbell of Hampton; two sons, Bernard W. Campbell of Salem and Carl S. Campbell of Great River, New York, a daughter, Mrs. Betty-Lou  Chase of Hampton Falls; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Private funeral services were held July 12 at the Ronald A. Remick Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Lawrence officiating. Burial was in the High Street Cemetery with committal services by the Rev. Mr. Lawrence. 

Prior to the funeral, services were held at the Rockingham Lodge of Odd Fellows under the direction of Gordon Webb, Noble Grand and Oliver Akerman chaplain.

Pall-bearers were Kenneth I. Campbell, Kevin W. Campbell, Bruce M. Campbell, Brian C. Campbell, Neil M. Campbell and Bernard H. Campbell. All are grandsons of Mr. Campbell.

Memorial donations may be made to the Winnacunnet High School Scholarship Fund, Alumni Drive, Hampton.
