NORTH HAMPTON -- Alden Samuel "Sam" Hoyt, 84, of North Hampton, former long-time resident of Hampton, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born March 13, 1928, in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late Laurence B. and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Lynch) Hoyt.

Sam graduated from Hampton Academy, Class of 1946, and attended Boston University. In 1950, he was employed in Washington, D.C., at the J. Edgar Hoover Federal Building, FBI-Fingerprint Division, and then at the Watertown Arsenal in Watertown, Mass., before taking a position at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a chemist in the Industrial Hygiene Department. He retired in 1985 with 33 years of civil service employment.

Sam was a charter member and was a daily communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish before his illness. He was present at the first Mass celebrated in the church, was a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council 5093 of the church, member of St. Mary's Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of Portsmouth, and the Exeter Chess Club.

Sam was a voracious reader and enjoyed researching and discussing historical dates and facts.

He was the husband of the late Simonne A. (Ladouceur) Hoyt, who predeceased him in 2000.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan M. Hoyt of Seattle, Wash., and Sandra M. Hoyt of North Hampton; his sister, Priscilla "Pat" (Triggs) Thoen of Ipswich, Mass.; sister-in-law Pierrette Hoyt of Framingham, Mass.; five grandchildren, Caitlyn, Abigail and Anna Ritchie, Kai Tindall Hoyt and Kalen Hoyt Tindall; his longtime companion, Shirley Whenal; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister Nancy and brothers Frank and Arthur Hoyt.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 14, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will follow In the High Street Cemetery, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
