HAMPTON -- Richard J. Ladd, 63, of 45 Ann's Lane died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. He was born June 1, 1927, in Exeter, the son of Daniel W. and Hester (Jackman) Ladd.

Mr. Ladd graduated from Watson Academy in Epping. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1950 and received his master's degree from Boston University in 1956.

After his graduation from UNH he resided in Epping for five years before moving to Rye, where he taught school at Rye Junior High School. Mr. Ladd moved to Hampton in 1959 and started teaching at Hampton Academy and continued teaching science and biology at Winnacunnet High School when it opened. During his tenure he coached both junior varsity basketball and varsity baseball until his retirement in 1987.

Mr. Ladd was a communicant and usher at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and was a member and past president of its Holy Name Society.

He was a member of the N.H. Coaches Association.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Helena. During the Korean conflict, after being drafted into the U.S. Army, he served as a military police MP in Garmish, Germany, remaining there for some time as a teacher at the American Dependents School.

He was the author of a book titled "N.H. Past and Present" which was distributed to schools and libraries within the state.

In the early 1950s he played baseball for the Epping town team. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Lorraine A. (deRochemont) Ladd of Hampton; one daughter, Janice H. Wilbur of Hampton; two grandchildren; three brothers, Daniel W. Ladd of Winchester, Mass., Paul Ladd of Epping and Peter T. Ladd of Framingham, Mass.; one sister, Barbara J. Berry of Carlisle, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ronald A. Remick Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Buria1 will be in Central Cemetery, Epping.
