WOLFEBORO - Gertrude Nelson Lougee, 95, formerly of Hampton, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004.

She was born in Lakeport, the daughter of the late Charles M. and Mabel (Bowen) Nelson. She was raised in Ashland and moved to Hampton in 1940 and spent many summers in Wolfeboro. After the death of her husband she spent her winters in Sarasota, Fla. In the last year of her life she lived in Keene where she was cared for by her granddaughter Becky and her family.

She was a graduate of Swampscott (Mass.) High School and the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston.

Mrs. Lougee was a talented seamstress, winning several Vogue sewing contests and sewing outfits for herself and her granddaughters. She was also an accomplished artist, exhibiting her art work in galleries throughout New England and was an active member of many art associations, including the Copley Society of Boston. Her ability to paint was curtailed in her last years owing to macular degeneration.

She was a past president of the Hampton Monday Club, New Hampshire Federation of Women's Clubs and an active member of the Hampton Historical Society and the Wolfeboro Women's Club.

She served as Sunday school superintendent at the Hampton First Congregational Church for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Lougee was one of the original residents of the Sugar Hill Retirement Community in Wolfeboro and enjoyed her cribbage games, her friendships and her family close by.

The widow of Carl M. Lougee, she is survived by one daughter-in-law, Glenna F. Lougee of Wolfeboro; four granddaughters Loreen L. Kline of Fairfax, Va., Wendy L. O'Brien of Wolfeboro, Angela L. Paisker of Glastonbury, Conn., and Becky L. Curran of Keene; four grandsons-in-law; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by one son, Barry N. Lougee; one daughter, Becky L. Wallace; one grandson, Craig G. Lougee; and one brother, Philip C. Nelson.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 4, in Wolfeboro. Private interment will be in the High Street Cemetery, Hampton with the Rev. Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Hampton, officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham MA 01701, as her husband, daughter and son succumbed to this disease.
