DOVER – Norman N. Merrill, 91, of Dover, formerly of Portsmouth, New Durham, Hampton and Winter Haven, Fla. died Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Langdon Place of Dover after a period of failing health.

He was born in Hampton, December 24, 1923, a son of the late Dean B. and C. Ruth (Noyes) Merrill. He was a graduate of Hampton Academy, Class of 1942 and Burdett College in Boston, Mass.

Mr. Merrill was a veteran of WW II serving with the US Navy.

After WW II, he started his career in banking with the former Hampton Co-Operative Bank, a bank founded by his father. He served for 42 years retiring as the CEO in 1990.

Mr. Merrill served Hampton as town treasurer and as a volunteer fire fighter. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Portsmouth, was an associate member of the Trinity United Congregational Church of Winter Haven, FL, a member of St. James Lodge No 102 F. & A.M. of Hampton, and the Hampton’s American Legion Post 35.

Norm enjoyed his camp on Merrymeeting Lake in New Durham, as well as wintering in Winter Haven, Fla. since his retirement. He had resided in Portsmouth for 40 years coming from Hampton in 1972.

He shared 40 years of marriage with his wife, Mary C. (Anderson) Merrill.

In addition to his wife, he leaves four children, Beverly Batchelder and husband Ed of Newton, Barbara Brogan and husband Mark of Loudon, Karen Cummings and husband Charles Noonan of Ottawa, Canada, Eric Cummings and wife Cheryll Ann of Rye, his brother, Russell A. Merrill of Hampton, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.

A visiting hour will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Private interment will be in the Central Cemetery, Rye.
