Jeannie Marelli Raynes

NORTH HAMPTON -- Eugenia Marcia Marelli Raynes, 85, of North Hampton, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2007 surrounded by her loving family and the wonderful caregivers at The Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.

Born September 29, 1922 to Italian immigrant parents, Celestina (Reggio) and Luigi Marelli above the family store in downtown Hampton, known today as Marelli's Market. Jeannie graduated from Hampton Academy with the Class of 1940. She furthered her education at The Wellesley School of Nursing, Wellesley, MA, and received accreditation as an X-ray technician. She worked at The Wellesley Home for Convalescing Children until her marriage to Fred Lewis Raynes in 1947.

As the wife of a Navy officer, she spent 10 years in California, giving birth to four daughters. Following Fred's retirement from the Navy after 20 years of service in 1958, the family moved to North Hampton to be closer to family and friends. She worked many of these past years in the family market until 2006. Bearing a strong resemblance to her mother, she was known to many of the children and patrons in Hampton as "Mrs. Marelli". This gave her special delight, as she loved everyone who came into the store, stopping by to see "Mrs. Marelli" for a visit.

She will be missed for her smile and quiet countenance by those patrons and her surviving family, daughters, Marcia and husband David Buber of North Hampton and Karen Raynes of North Hampton and Pinedale, WY. She had a special love for and took pride in her grandson Michael Hannon of West Lebanon, ME, loving his wife Melissa and their three children (her great grandchildren) Graham Raynes Hannon, Luca Marelli Hannon, and Josie Lee Hannon. She also enjoyed her step-grandson Scott Buber, Lisa and their children A.J. and Alyssa of Goffstown, NH. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters-in-law, L. Robert and Joyce Marelli of Hampton Falls and Richard and Trudy Marelli of Hampton as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by twin daughters Janet & Janice in 1954, her father Luigi in 1959, her mother Celestina and husband Fred in 1983, her sister Francis and brother-in-law Bill Berry, nephew Dennis Berry and his daughter Jessica, & nephew Thomas Marelli.

Jeannie's family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone at the The Edgewood Centre for all of their support and loving care.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, November 25, 2007 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A funeral mass was celebrated Monday, November 26, 2007 at St. Theresa Church, 820 Central Road, Rye Beach. Interment was in the Center Cemetery, North Hampton.
