HAMPTON -- Funeral services for Herbert L. Tobey prominent Hampton businessman, were held Tuesday afternoon from his home at 227 Mill Road.

Mr. Tobey died Sunday, [January 4, 1959], at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. He was 80 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 22, 1878, he was the son of Henry H. and Ada (Higgins) Tobey. He had lived here for the last 50 years.

He was president of the Tobey and Merrill Insurance company, of which he was a founder, and also was president of the Industrial Dye Stuff company of East Providence, R.I. He was a director and one of the founders of the Hampton Cooperative Bank and was a former trustee of the Exeter, Hampton & Amesbury Street Railway Company.

Mr. Tobey was a member of Rockingham LOdge, No. 22, IOOF, of Hampton, and was a former town clerk in Hampton.

He leaves three sons, Lester Tobey of Derry, Vt., Nelson Tobey of Arlington, Va., and Paul L. Tobey of Rehoboth, Mass.; two daughters, Mrs. Constance O'Shaughnessy of New Canaan, Conn., and Mrs. Margaret Barry of Hampton; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Florence Bullen of Melrose, Mass.

Services were conducted by Rev. William G. McInnes, pastor of the First Congregational Church, Hampton. Bearers were William O'Shaughnessy, Thayer Barry, Dean B. Merrill, Lester Tobey, Nelson Tobey, and Paul L. Tobey. Burial was in the High Street Cemetery.
