HAMPTON - The Rev. Dr. Duane A. Windemiller, 93, of Hampton Beach, died Jan. 18, 2012, at his home on Hampton Beach.

He was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., April 12, 1918, and was raised in Norfolk, Va., and Washington, D.C. He graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, Anderson University, Anderson, Ind. (B.A.), Boston University School of Theology (B.S.T.) and Boston University Graduate School, receiving a Ph.D. in 1960.

Dr. Windemiller pastored churches in Moultonville and Tuftonboro, N.H., Abington, Mass., Haverhill, Mass., and Hampton Beach [at the Hampton Beach Community Church.] He was a U.S. Army chaplain in Korea and served in the National Guard, retiring in 1970.

Dr. Windemiller joined the faculty of Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, Mass., in 1966, served as chairman of the behavioral sciences department for nine years and retired in 1983.

He also served as chairman of the board at the Haverhill Union Mission for 20 years and co-chairman of the Haverhill Gazette Santa Fund. In 1965 he founded Bethany Homes Inc., of Haverhill, dedicated to improving housing for older Americans. His efforts resulted in the building of the Merrivista, Mission Towers and Phoenix housing projects, among others in Haverhill. He applied for and received a federal grant, which funded a research project to study the educational needs of the elderly, that resulted in a pilot project of seminars for seniors at Northern Essex Community College. Dr. Windemiller was awarded the Governor's Certificate of Merit for his work with seniors. He also earned recognition as Haverhill Man of the Year by the B'Nai Brith and Psychology Teacher of the Year for two-year colleges by the American Psychological Society.

Family members include his son, Duane A. Windemiller Jr., of Hampton; daughters Melanie J. Murphy of Kensington and Starr A. Sullivan of Hampton; grandchildren Gerry Windemiller, Jamie Windemiller and Kelly Illescas of Fayetteville, N.C., and Patrick Sullivan, Emmalyn Sullivan and Nora Sullivan of Hampton; sister Joy Myers; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife of over 63 years, Pauline (Gray) Windemiller, who died in 2008, he was predeceased by his son, Gerald M. Windemiller; his brother, Donlan C. Windemiller, and his sister; Neila Rohr.

SERVICES: Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

The service is Thursday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. in First Congregational Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
