Eleanor Palmer YoungHAMPTON — Eleanor Young, 96, of Hampton, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Rockingham County Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 20, 1918, the daughter of the late Roscoe B. and Minnie P. (Arnold) Palmer. She was a lifelong resident of Hampton and a descendent of one of the founding families. She attended Centre School in Hampton, and graduated from Hampton Academy in 1936. She attended the Women's College of the University of North Carolina, and graduated from Burdett College in Lynn, Mass.

She was employed as a bookkeeper at the Hampton Union and Hampton Publishing Company, working with her fiance, Vernon Dennett. She left the Hampton Union to raise a family, and then returned to work at Palmer and Sicard in Hampton until her retirement.

Eleanor was proud of her heritage in the old town of Hampton. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton for 86 years, and a member of the Ladies Guild. She was a life member of the Hampton Historical Society, and a longtime volunteer at the Tuck Museum. She was member of the James House Association, and belonged to the Piscataqua Pioneers. As a young mother she was a den mother with the Hampton Cub Scouts, and was a member of the Mothers Circle of Hampton.

She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and loving friends. She especially enjoyed the family camp at the lake, dinner parties with her special friends, and playing cards, especially whist.

She enjoyed 40 years of marriage with her husband, Vernon Dennett, until his death in 1981. In 1985, she married Abbott Young, and they enjoyed their retirement years together until his passing in 1998.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the wonderful care that Eleanor received at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

Surviving family members include two sons, Brian Dennett and his wife, Lot, of Brentwood, and Robert and his wife, Helen, of North Hampton; grandchildren Nancy Ducharme and her husband, Jeff, of Hampton, Eric Dennett of Brentwood, Juli Hird and her husband, Stephen, of Center Sandwich, and Ryan Dennett and his partner, Lauren McClean, of Raymond; four great-grandchildren; her brother, William R. Palmer of North Hampton; her sister-in-law, Margaret Dennett of Hampton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Arnold B. Palmer, who died in 2003.

SERVICES: Relatives and friends are respectively invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Remick and Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, in the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Burial will follow in the High Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hampton Historical Society, P.O. Box 1601, Hampton, NH 03843-1601, or the First Congregational Church.
