HAMPTON -- The family of murder victim Gregg Smart can't believe that prison officials are allowing Smart's killer to work on sensitive security systems while behind bars.

In 1990, Smart was killed in Derry by William Flynn, a Seabrook teen who was having an affair with Smart's wife, Pamela Smart.

Flynn pleaded guilty and is serving his time at the Maine State Prison. He is seeking a sentence reduction, saying he is so trusted in prison that he is called on to maintain the prison's security and fire alarm systems.

"How am I ever going to have peace of mind when that kid gets out of jail," brother Dean Smart said.

"That's like teaching Jack the Ripper how to sharpen knives."

Smart said he can't accept the idea of Flynn, who along with another friend broke into Gregg Smart's Derry condominium and laid in wait, working on alarm systems.

"He's not the safest guy in the world," said Smart, who says he is now the spokesman for the family, taking over for his father, William. "We're both incensed. You can't do that. It's fundamentally flawed."
