Hampton was founded in 1638 by a small number of families of English origin, led by the town’s founder the Reverend Stephen Bachiler. Over the following centuries descendants of those few families, and many more who moved to town in later years, have spread around the world. Some descendants come to do research in our New Hampshire room, while many more use the genealogical and historical resources on the library’s website.
Browse through the menus at left to explore Hampton’s history and genealogy. One of the first stops to research Hampton ancestors should be our database of over 23,000 individuals who lived in town over the past four centuries. This resource had its origin in 1997 when all of the genealogical data from volume two of Joseph Dow’s History of Hampton was entered into a database. Since that time information has been added from many more genealogical reference works, and many corrections and additions have been made to Dow’s original work.
