HAMPTON —- Roof trusses of the CVS Pharmacy store under construction on Lafayette Road collapsed Wednesday, bringing Hampton firefighters to the scene.
Fire Chief Chris Silver said there were no injuries and construction crews returned to work after safety inspectors determined the site was safe.
"It could have been a lot more serious than it was," Silver said.
Fire and police personnel and the town's building inspector were called to the scene around 3 p.m. Silver said crews were erecting the roof trusses of the 10,000-square-foot steel building when they suddenly collapsed. Silver said he does not know what happened to cause the structural failure.
"We did a thorough assessment of the structure to make sure there was no further risk of collapse," said Silver, who added, once it was determined there was no further risk, emergency personnel left the scene in the hands of a construction foreman.
