‘News Around Town’

Hoyt’s Copy Center is the latest longtime business to close its doors in downtown Hampton.

The store, which has been operating at the Brook’s Plaza on Lafayatte Road for the last 32 years, closed earlier this month with little warning.

A sign that was placed on the door to the store states the reason why it closed is because “the expenses here are getting to be just too much.”

“Thank you sincerely for your business over the past 30 years, friendship and your loyalty,” states the sign.

Hoyt’s Copy Center joins a long list of other stores in the downtown area, including Colts News and the Shell Gas Station, that have closed down.

And while a lot of businesses have left the downtown area in the last few years, others have come in. Now, there are rumors that a Starbucks and Fed Ex Copy Center will replace the Shell Gas Station and a store respectively but nothing has come before the town’s Planning Board.

Last month, the Brook’s Plaza was sold for $1.7 million to Linear Retail Properties, but that was not the reason for Hoyt’s closing.

And while Hoyt’s is no longer in Hampton, the Portsmouth store is still operating.
