HAMPTON -- To pamper; to allow one some special pleasure.

That is the meaning of the word "Indulge."

It is also the idea behind Jay and Donna Portinari's small store named Indulge at 12 High Street. The definition is painted on the back wall of the store and reads like a mantra for the products within.

The store specializes in handmade, all-natural, animal-friendly soaps and bath products. There are 60 to 70 soaps to choose from in a variety of scents. They range from floral to spicy to fresh or fruity and even holiday soaps or a soap for dogs that doubles as an insect repellent.

"These soaps are long-lasting, beautifully designed and we have a large selection," said Donna.

The store also offers bath salts, lotions, shaving soaps (complete with mug and brush), bath robes, greeting cards, rubber duckies and gift baskets in a variety of shapes and sizes. Baskets can also be made to order and even delivered. Gift certificates are also available.

But, the items offered at Indulge aren't just for gift giving.

Jay said as the name of the store implies, customers can treat themselves to the little store's offerings. He added the store is perfect for those seeking a little personal treat or a better quality bath product that wont break the bank.

"Because they deserve it," he said, "and maybe they couldn't afford that luxury car this year. These products are a small indulgence for the body and soul."

The two said they got the idea during a visit to California. They entered a specialty bath store that had a focus on handmade soaps.

"I was so taken aback by the store out in San Francisco," said Jay. "That's how we got the idea."

Indulge is open from 12-6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday; from 3-7 p.m. on Thursday; and 12-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The store is located across the street from Carteret Mortgage Corporation and Twinkletoes. Ample parking is available in the nearby municipal lot.
