Me and Ollie's, a popular cafe, bakery and sandwich shop in downtown Hampton, has officially closed its doors.

A sign was posted on the dark High Street building informing customers that the local chain, which has stores in Portsmouth, Exeter, Greenland and Newington, will only shutter the Hampton location.

"Me & Ollie's has been proud to serve the Hampton community for 6 years," read the sign. "We have chosen not to renew our lease and will be closing this location on November 30th."

The sign went on to say that the business would appreciate the public's continued patronage of the other stores, and thanked the area for supporting the small business.

"We are grateful to our loyal customers who made us the successful bakery and cafes that we are today," read the sign.

There was no answer machine message attached the store's main phone line. A message was left for Me and Ollie's General Manager Pia Bickford, who oversees all the stores, although she couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Officials from local bakery and café chain Me and Ollie's say the decision to not renew the lease for the Hampton location has to do partly with a new business opportunity in Newington.

Me and Ollie's has released the following statement via e-mail to Hampton-North Hampton Patch about last week's closure of the Hampton location:

Me & Ollie’s operated a café in Hampton for six years and [owner Roger] Elkus chose not to renew the lease on that site. Employees have shifted to the other cafes and Elkus said he is most thankful for the Hampton patrons for their loyalty and support.

“I loved the community and all my kids worked at that café. It was not an easy decision. But knowing our plans not to renew the lease, when we heard about the great new location becoming available, we decided to go for it.”

The company, which Elkus started in 1998, will open the Newington store at some point in mid December at 45 Gosling Road, in a building across from Regal Cinemas and next door to Cold Stone Creamery and Chipotle.

The statement from Me and Ollie's stated that Elkus has been working on the location for six months, and said he is "excited to note that Me and Ollie's is the first local company allowed on the Fox Run Mall site."

The statement also said the new location, which won't serve breakfast like the other stores in the chain and will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, has added 22 new jobs to the area.

Despite the positives, there have been some mixed feelings about the Hampton store's closure.

More information about Me and Ollie's, including information about new menu options and features at the Newington location, is available on the company's website.
