High Street, Hampton

Nelson J. Norton's blacksmith shop was located on High Street across from the American Legion Post 35 hall at 69 High Street. Norton also made wagons. The one pictured belonged to Edwin Janvrin, the lumber dealer who supplied the construction materials for the Hampton Beach Casino and many other beach buildings. The blacksmith shop was in operation up to the middle 1920s. Mr. Norton built a wagon for Homer Johnson in the early 20s. He also built a hay wagon for Sam Towle's father and the wagon was still at the Towle Farm on Towle Farm Road in the early 1970s.
Shown below is a photograph of the site of the former Norton Blacksmith shop taken in 1970. The building in the background is the Merrill Lumber Company building, which burned on August 6, 1966. The sign on the building reads "MERRILL LUMBER 926-3312". [See link below for fire story.]
