HAMPTON -- A small structure fire on Tuesday caused a local sandwich shop to close and traffic along Route 1 to be diverted for approximately an hour.

At 11:45 a.m. the Hampton fire department responded to 725 Lafayette Road, the location of TNT Subs, for a report of a fire.

According to Fire Chief Hank Lipe the small electrical fire originated from the attic of the building. Firefighters had it under control within 30 minutes of their arrival.

Lipe estimated $2,000 in damage to the building with an undetermined amount of damage to food in the lower portion of the building because of smoke.

"Several of the ceiling beams are charred with the charring and embers being contained in the attic," said Lipe.

Lipe ruled out arson or foul play and stated the ensuing investigation will be specific to where the electrical failure originated. The health inspector will also investigate any health concerns specific to smoke damage to the food.

Traffic along Route 1 was diverted for the better part of an hour to allow firefighters to run a hose across the road to a nearby hydrant.
