HAMPTON -- TNT Subs will be closed for a couple of days after a fire in the attic of the Lafayette Road business on Tuesday.

Owners Ann Marie and Joe Gaudreault said they are grateful for the quick response by the firefighters, which they credit with saving their restaurant.

A phone message from the store says they hope to reopen in few days.

On Tuesday at 11:50 a.m., the Fire Department received a 911 emergency call from a nearby business owner who spotted smoke coming from the attic of the sub shop.

Fire Chief Hank Lipe said the small blaze was extinguished in 30 minutes and the damage was contained to the attic but there was smoke damage in the restaurant.

While the cause of fire is still under investigation, Lipe said he thinks it was because of an electrical issue.

No one was injured in the fire.

Ann Marie Goudreault said they were downstairs in the restaurant preparing for the afternoon lunch rush when she began to smell smoke.

"We checked the kitchen and there was no problem," said Goudreault. "Then we checked the bathroom and there was burning debris falling from the ceiling."

Lipe estimated that the fire caused about $2,000 in damages.

Firefighters from Exeter, Seabrook, North Hampton, Rye and Portsmouth assisted at the scene and station coverage in Hampton.

Hampton Police were also at the scene directing traffic. Firefighters closed off a section of Route 1 for about an hour.

The couple, who purchased the sub shop in December, said it's been a rough start.

Last week, the shop was robbed of $1,000.

"It's just been one thing after another," said Gaudreault.
