HAMPTON — The search for one of two new deputy fire chiefs for the town of Hampton appears to have come to its possible conclusion.

As of the Atlantic News' press time on Monday of this week, Hampton Fire Captain Steve Benotti had been appointed the department's Acting Deputy Fire Chief — Operations, according to Hampton Town Manager James Barrington. The operations position for which Benotti is now the acting deputy fire chief covers vehicles and personnel. Reorganization within the department calls for an additional deputy fire chief of EMS safety and training, a position which has yet to be filled.

Benotti was one of four inhouse candidates who underwent extensive written testing and oral interviews conducted last week under the supervision of four regional fire chiefs and Hampton Town Manager James Barrington. Hampton Fire Chief Hank Lipe was not a part of the decision-making panel.

A resident of Exeter, Benotti has been with the Hampton fire department since starting there as a fire fighter in January of 1985. Advancing through the ranks, he became a captain 18 months ago.

The deputy chief openings became available when Hampton Deputy Fire Chief Tony Chouinard recently announced his retirement, which became official the middle of last week.

A nationwide search will now be conducted to fill the position for the deputy chief of EMS safety and training.
