HAMPTON – The New Hampshire Fire Service Committee of Merit recognized Hampton firefighters last month in Concord at the 11th annual Fire Service Awards and Recognition Presentation at the Capitol Center for the Arts.
Capt. Guy Larivee and firefighter Michael Nickerson both received Class 2 Medals of Valor for the actions last summer during an ocean storm with 20-foot waves and strong rip currents. Two children and one adult were rescued off the shoreline at Hampton Beach during the storm. The rest of the crew, under the command of Deputy Chief Steve Benotti, were awarded a Unit Citation for their actions during the incident. “Hampton Fire/Rescue has a history of having a strong marine rescue program, making a positive difference in the community for the safety of all Hampton residents and those who visit our beaches,” Chief Hank Lipe said.
Hampton’s ocean rescue capability will increase in quality soon, when the department takes receipt of a rescue boat. Voters approved $50,000 for the lease/purchase of a rescue boat in March.
