HAMPTON - Selectmen chose not to go forward this year with a $3.9 million article to construct a new beach fire station and to add a headquarters facility to the town station on Winnacunnet Road.

The board voted to hold off on the beach substation, and to instead ask voters to pay $1.7 million to construct an addition to the town station only.

The Village District, which owns the current Hampton Beach Fire Station on Ashworth Avenue, has offered to extend the lease it has with the town. The lease expires in April.

The board is giving the voters the option to save the old Hampton District Court by relocating it and setting it up as part of the new addition to the town fire station.

The article will ask voters to pay an additional $250,000 to move and renovate the building.

Police chief pinned

Jamie Sullivan is officially the next police chief of Hampton.

Sullivan was sworn into office as the town's 23rd chief during Monday night's selectmen's meeting by Rockingham County Sheriff Daniel Linehan in front of his family and fellow officers and police chiefs from neighboring communities.

"It's very humbling to see this many people turn out for this," said Sullivan, after his wife, Cathy, pinned on his new badge. "I look forward to serving with the fine men and women of the Hampton police Department."

Sullivan replaces former Police Chief Bill Wrenn, who retired last month to become the new head of the state prisons.

The night was extra special for Sullivan because it also marked the anniversary of when he first joined the Hampton Police Department as a full-time officer in 1986.

Over the years, Sullivan held the positions of sergeant, lieutenant and captain.
