HAMPTON -- Christopher Silver has been named the town's new fire chief.

Town Manager Fred Welch announced the appointment during the selectmen's meeting Monday night.

Silver was promoted from one of the town's two deputy fire chief positions on Friday. He has replaced Hank Lipe, who resigned in August to take a $105,000-a-year fire chief job in Vashon, Wash. Welch said Silver was one of three in-house applicants.

All three candidates were interviewed for the position on Sept. 18 by Welch and a panel consisting of three fire chiefs from central New Hampshire.

Silver begins his tenure as chief as the town continues to work towards upgrading the town fire station and constructing a new Hampton Beach fire station.

Silver joined the Hampton Fire Department in 1993 as its first paramedic. Over the years, he served as a firefighter, fire lieutenant and finally as deputy chief responsible for safety and training, emergency medical services and technical rescue.

Silver has an associate degree in fire science and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program. His certifications include Hazardous Materials Technician, Fire Instructor III, Fire Officer II and EMT-Paramedic.

Welch told selectmen Silver will be sworn in at a date to be determined later.
