HAMPTON BEACH MEMORIAL to those who gave their lives at sea has been enhanced by two flag standards and the addition of the state and national flags, thanks to a gift to the state by the Hampton American Legion Post 35. HAMPTON BEACH -- Two new flag standards and the American and state flags add to the Marine Memorial at Hampton Beach.
The American Legion post of this community, at Veterans Day ceremonies, officially presented the additions to the state.
Cmdr. Theodore Kopanski was joined at the monument by a host of state and local dignitaries. George T. Gilman, DRED director, represented Gov. Walter Peterson.
Others present included Stanley Shea, Milford, Legion state commander; Gordon Hollingsworth, present of the Hampton Beach Chamber of Commerce; Precinct Commissioners Perley George, Ralph Harris and John Foley; and Walter Vanderpool, former chamber president and one of th speakers.
Master of ceremonies for the occasion was John Chernesky, a past commander of the Legion post.
A special guest was William Downs of Manchester, who conceived the idea of the memorial for those who died at sea during World War II. Downs, who lost a son at sea, campaigned for 11 years for the memorial before it was established 13 years ago.
