Road To Understanding
"Good! There comes George," and my love went out in fullness toward this cherished friend. I was grateful for the privilege of enjoying his friendship in return. Then, as the man came nearer, I saw that it wasn't George at all, but a perfect stranger. So I withdrew my love from him, enclosing it again in my heart, because I had been mistaken.
But now a voice from within me seemed to speak, saying: "Why do you withdraw your love from this stranger? It could well be that he has more need of it than George. Remember there is little merit in loving only one's friends, but much merit in learning to love all men."
And so I came to one more sign post along the endless Road to Understanding."

Their lofty fronds in air.

SPRING
"There's a new tenderness in the air one day, there's a lingering light that hints of spring. Now begins the old ritual where in all happens in order, to the same music of brooks unchanged and un-stoppered bird song and unrelenting choir of the frogs. Now it has all come back, the old sweeet ache.
"Again the wind, up from the south, brings the reek of turned earth, bears too, the ancient freight of pollen. Through the bare woods and pine woods shines a sudden drift of bloom, and on your lawn you see again the wound up-run-and stop of robins. Now we remember what we had forgotten; now we miss those who were tall when we were small. Now we search for meaning in our lives -- we who are tall for a few more springs.
"This wistfulness that some call spring fever is the beginning of wonder, and wonder is the beginning of worship, as any one feels who has ever stopped to gaze at sunshine in the fragile grail of a crocus.
"Spring is the time to ask questions of Nature, for the answers are affirmative. And out of such smiling replies even the doubting may build a faith.
"Spring marks the smallest sparrows flight. The increasing light draws the birds northward, as northward the growing length of day takes its flight toward the pole.
"These winging hosts, together with the flowers in the woods, bear witness innocently; like our earth their lives are obediently inclined toward the source of light. Spring is a testament to life eternal, and a promise of resurrection."
--Donald Culross Peattie

"Cry not for me when I shall die
and leave behind this earth I love.
These trees, this sky, the ever-pounding sea.
The yearly hope of spring.
Cry not for me. Rejoice!
My soul has wings, and
In its freedom, sings."
--Joan B. Danziger

" When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm is a golden sky.
And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone.
You'll never walk alone." --(From the song)

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE & WEEP

"Do not stand at my grave & weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am he gentle, autumn rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!"
--By Mary Frye (1932) [From Bill (Holman), my oldest son.]

To do good is my religion.

An Evening Prayer
"Father, I have much to be grateful for tonight and I thank you. I have much to regret and I ask your forgiveness. But even as I ask your forgiveness, I know that I receive it, and a deep peace fills my heart. Help me to sleep well tonight and to wake early ready for that daily yet greatest of gifts, a fresh start."
--From "Plain Prayers For A Complicated World" by Avery Brooks

A Morning Prayer
"Take my hand, Lord, and lead me through this day, step by step. Remind me that I cannot do everything I wish, nor do any of it perfectly. Only you are perfect, and only with your help can I do my best. Help me to remember to ask for that help. I know that I am unable to do great things for you God, but help me to be neither too lazy nor too proud to take such small steps as I cam able to take. Help me to trust to you those concerns beyond my rach so that I may give my full attention to living each moment as it comes. Oh, Lord, give us the unashamed courage to believe in the highest and the best ideals of our country, and enough passionate patience to make them come true."
--From "Plain Prayers For A Complicated World" by Avery Brooks

Lullaby (Sung to us)
"The sun has gone from the shing sky,
Bye, Baby, Bye;
The dandelions have closed their eyes,

The babies and squirrels and birdies, all three
Are sound asleep as they ought to be.
Bye, Baby, Bye."
