"Ernest L. White was born in Somerville, MA, November 10, 1881.

"While still in school, sometime in the 1890's, he and a friend bought a wet-plate camera, a horse and a milk wagon, and drove up to the Lakes Region of NH as itinerant photographers. They returned to Somerville just before the new school year began.

"Another year, they drove to Wiscasset, Maine, but no record of this journey has been found. Ernest's mother's family, the Lamberts, at one time held a land grant in Wiscasset from the Proprietors of the Massachusetts colony, which may have been the reason for choosing this destination.

"In 1902, at age 21, Ernest accepted a position as co-manager of a coffee plantation in Mexico. He contracted malaria and returned to the States a year or two later. His Mexican experiences are chronicled in 'A Mexican Diary'.

"In 1906 he married Edna Hussey and moved to Derry, NH. They had a son, John, and moved to Hampton at the present site of 317 Mill Road. This house burned to the ground and the small family moved across the street to the farmhouse now owned by Margaret Barry. Alice (nee White) Dalton was born there in 1910, and Robert in 1925.

"Ernest raised sheep for their wool, worked for the Hampton Water Works as an engineer, acted in local productions, wrote articles and poems for Hampton Union, and built several cottages on Mill Road. After Robert died in WW II, Ernest and John built a house just north of the farm in North Hampton. He died December 15, 1956 at the age of 75."
