HAMPTON - A new stone will be added to Founder's Park honoring another one of Hampton's earliest settlers.

Selectmen approved a recommendation from the Heritage Commission to add a monument to the Elkins family.

Erika Elkins made the request to the commission after studying her family's heritage.

She told the commission that her family should have also been recognized at Founder's Park a long time ago.

After reading a notice last year that all families who have been represented at Founder's Park had to have arrived before 1700, I knew Henry Elkins and his sons, Eleazer and Gershom, belonged there as Henry had been mentioned in town records as early as 1648, and Gershorn was one of the first ministers at Hampton Congregational Church prior to 1700," stated Elkins in a letter to the board.

Selectmen approved the request Monday night. The stone will be paid for by Elkins.

Stones representing the early families of Hampton are placed around the perimeter of the park. {See photos of the stones at the Hampton Historical Society website.)
