The Trustees of the Proprietary School in Hampton Corporation
(February 5, 1811 to May 15, 1821)
The Board of Trustees of the Proprietary School in Hampton (Known as Hampton Academy)
(May 15,1821 to April 12, 1943)
The Board of Trustees of Hampton Academy and High School, Inc.
(April 12, 1943 to present)
The Trustees have donated this space so that the list of Academy Trustees begun by Joseph Dow in his “History of the Town of Hampton, New Hampshire” (pages 498-500) may be brought up to the present. Additions to Dow’s original list as well as the names of Trustees who held office after his manuscript went to press in the fall of 1892 are presented below. The two-digit apostrophized number after some names indicates the year of graduation from Hampton Academy and High School. Other Trustees, such as Elmore L. Dearborn and Wheaton J. Lane, attended the Academy but transferred to another secondary school before graduation. Still others (e.g., Horace M. Lane and Christopher G. Toppan) attended Hampton Academy before a diploma-granting program was initiated with the consolidation of Hampton Academy and High School in 1885. One Trustee, Prof. Jack Sanborn, was Principal of the Academy. (Much earlier, Trustee Amos Tuck was both Principal and former Academy student.) It should be noted that Superintendents of Schools — although they sometimes sat in on Board meetings after 1916 — were not ex officio members of the Board. Despite nonmembership, however, Charles N. Perkins (Superintendent, 1925-30) was elected Auditor of the Corporation by the Trustees in 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929.
(Note: Since the Board operates on a July-through-June year, the final year of “Time of Office” in some instances is the year after a resignation was submitted or the year after death. Such Trustees were considered members of the Board until the following annual meeting in June when resignations were accepted and or successors were chosen.)
[Editor’s note: The list below updates and adds to the list in Dow. See that list for a complete list of the early Academy Trustees.
