Business changes in Hampton occur quite frequently. This web page is an attempt to document some, but not all, of those changes as they occur. It is not meant to be comprehensive, but is simply a chronicle of some of the changes that have taken place. Also included are some changes to town government buildings and schools. References and links to related newspaper articles are sometimes included for those who wish further information.

Surface Medical Esthetics
Surface Medical Esthetics opened at 822 Lafayette Road in July of 2016. The specialize in surface body treatments like face lifts, Botox, massage, skin treatments and facial work.
Seacoast Powersports
Seacoast Powersports, a motorcycle, ATV, scooter, and watercraft dealership, opened at 597 Lafayette Road by April of 2016.
Snap Fitness
This workout center / gym opened at 845 Lafayette Road in March 2016.
Scott Family Chiropractic
Scott Family Chiropractic moved its office from 1 Park Avenue #7B-G to 92 High Street #4 as of February 1, 2016.
Baron Forrester
This wine and cheese shop opened at 446 Lafayette Road in early February, 2016.
RE/MAX On The Move
RE/MAX On The Move real estate opened at 881 Lafayette Road in January of 2016
Rico Figs Restaurant
Rico Figs Restaurant opened its doors at 822 Lafayette Road on October 12, 2015.
Kraft Salon
Kraft Salon moved from their 27 Lafayette Road, Suite 3B location in North Hampton to 827 Lafayette Road in Hampton at the end of September 2015.
Smiles by the Sea Family Dentistry
This dentist's office opened at 2 Dearborn Avenue by September of 2015. Prior to that it was the dental office of Peter A. Thomas for many years.
Franky's Burgers & Fries
Franky's Burgers & Fries opened at 625 Lafayette Road in the summer of 2015.
Pick'n Cousins
This shop opened at 15 High Street in August of 2015. They sell home goods, nautical items, furniture and do custom work such as refinished furniture, painted furniture, and crafts. Opened by cousins Dawn Poussard and Diane O'Brien Fanning.
TNT Subs and Victoria's Kitchen
TNT Subs of 725 Lafayette Road officially closed in the summer of 2015 after being at that location since 1989. Victoria's Kitchen Cafe-Catering and meals to go, an extension of the Victoria Inn, was the new tenant at that location beginning in August.
Breaking Bean Coffee Company
Breaking Bean Coffee Company opened at 3 High Street on June 26, 2015.
Allstate Insurance - James Homet
After 29 years located at the Merrill Drive Industrial Park, James Homet moved his Allstate Insurance business to 830 Lafayette Road in May 2015.
RBA Outfitters
RBA Outfitters opened in the Hampton Village Shops mall at 387 Lafayette Road in April of 2015. They specialize in shooting sports including firearms, ammunition and accessories.
Edward Jones Investments
Edward Jones Investments opened at 448 Lafayette Road by January of 2015.
Mackensen & Company, Inc..
Mackensen & Co., financial planners, moved from their old location on Merrill Industrial Drive (where they had been located for 15 years) to the Howard Garland Lane House at 380 Lafayette Road on November 1, 2014, formerly corporate headquarters for Foss Manufacturing.
New England Brand House
New England Brand House opened at 70 High Street in October of 2014. They are a New England-inspired clothing and custom apparel mill store.
Dash Designs, LLC
Dash Designs opened at 17 High Street in October of 2014. They are a graphic design company that makes signs, banners, decals, etc. They had moved to 169 Ocean Blvd. by the summer of 2016.
CR's The Restaurant
CR's The Restaurant opened at 287 Exeter Road in October of 2014. Bontá Restaurant was located at this address until the previous June.
Sweet Peas Garden Gift Shop
The Sweet Peas Garden Gift Shop opened at 3 High Street in May of 2014, but was closed in October of the same year.
Route 1 Kettelbell
Route 1 Kettelbell, a workout center, opened at 845 Lafayette Road on January 2, 2014.
The Purple Carrot Gift & Gourmet
The Purple Carrot gift and gourmet shop opened at 3 High Street in December of 2013 but was closed by March of 2014.
Alchemy Music Center
Alchemy Music Center Boutique opened at 28 Depot Square in the Fall of 2013.
Wild About Wine
Wild About Wine vineyard tours opened in the Homebrew Barn at 861 Lafayette road #6 on September 2, 2013. They offer customers day trip tours of vineyards around New Hampshire and New England.
The Wicked Sweet Sugar Boutique
The Wicked Sweet Sugar Boutique opened at 12 High Street in September of 2013. It was first established as an at-home business in March of 2010.
Cecily Larson's Montessori School
Cecily Larson's Montessori School at 52 High Street closed its doors at the end of the summer of 2013.
Perron Insurance Services
Perron Insurance Services opened at 400 Lafayette Road in August 2013. They were first founded in January 2012.
Seacoast Florist
Seacoast Florist, located in Depot Square, changed owners in the summer of 2013. Previous owner Cindy Willis sold it to Maria Moriarty.
Logan's Run
Logan's Run, a restaurant, opened at 816 Lafayette Road by the end of July 2013. Prior to this O'Leary's Grille had been in this location since 1996. The new owner, Scott Logan, is the nephew of the owner of O'Leary's.
RL Safe Home
RL Safe Home opened at 387 Lafayette Road by August of 2013. They sell wheel chairs, scooters, and other mobility assistance devices.
Salon Trio
Salon Trio opened at 868 Lafayette Road in June 2013.
Margot's HairStudio
Margot's HairStudio opened at 893 Lafayette Road by some time in 2013.
Breathe Again Massage Therapy
Breathe Again Massage Therapy opened at 7 High Street in June or July of 2013.
Jacqueline Walker's Eco Chic Lifestyle Salon Shoppe
Jacqueline Walker's Eco Chic Lifestyle Salon Shoppe opened at 725 Lafayette Road Suite 2 in June 2013. They aim to provide a tranquil setting while offering ammonia free hair color, organic, vegan, eco-friendly hair, beauty and lifestyle products.
CAD Technical Training and Services
CAD Technical Training and Services opened in the small mall at 725 Lafayette Road by June of 2013.
Alchemy Music Center
Alchemy Music Center opened at 28 Depot Square in June 2013.
Kennebunk Savings Bank
Kennebunk Savings Bank opened at 24 Winnacunnet Road and 355 Lafayette Road in May 2013. The building occupies the former Gray's Funeral Home and Friendly's Restaurant at 24 Winnacunnet Road, and has an exit at 355 Lafayette where Cityland Farms (formerly Cumberland Farms) used to stand. The latter building was torn down in October 2012 during the construction phase.
Flatbread Pizza Company
Flatbread Pizza Company opened a branch of its popular restaurant at 61 High Street in February of 2013. It went out of business in May of 2017.
Paws for Applause
Paws for Applause, a pet store/boutique, held their grand reopening at 871 Lafayette Road next to Hampton Veterinary Hospital on April 5, 2013. It had previously gone under the names of Hampton Pet Supply and Hampton Pets Unlimited, LLC, originally opening in December of 2012.
Victoria Chic & Unique Fine Furniture
Victoria Chic & Unique opened at by November of 2012
401 Tavern expands
The 401 Tavern opened up a Corporate Headquarters across the street at 400 Lafayette Road by December of 2012. In the summer of 2015 they opened a gift shop at 393 Lafayette Road next door to the restaurant.
Trudy's Bone Appetit
Trudy's Bone Appetit, a gourmet dog treat specialty shop, opened at 12 High Street in Hampton in December 2012. This location had been vacant since early in 2010 when North Beach Massage moved. By the summer of 2013 they were no longer at this location.
Bliss 360 Salon, Spa, Fitness
Bliss 360 Salon, Spa, Fitness opened at 580 Lafayette Road by November of 2012. This was apparently a name change from Indigo Salon and Spa, which was there since April 2011, and bethat it was known as H2O Salon of Hampton, which came into existence at the end of 2010. All three businesses were owned by Joelle Daboul.
Gold by Daniel
Gold by Daniel opened at 822 Lafayette Road, Unit 4, by October of 2012.
Blue Lobster Brewery
The Blue Lobster Brewery opened its retail shop next to the Community Oven at 845 Lafayette Road on November 8, 2012. They were incorporated in November of 2011 but couldn't begin brewing anything in their facility until September 8th of 2012.
Top Shelf Brews
Top Shelf Brews , a craft beer store, opened at 826 Lafayette Road in September 2012. This was the former location of Hampton Copy.
Home Brew Barn
The Home Brew Barn opened at 861 Lafayette Road #6A in July 2012.
Fores Restaurant
Fores Restaurant opened at 822 Lafayette Road in May 2012 after the former tenant -- Music Makers -- moved to 18 Lafayette Road in North Hampton. Fores went out of business in the Fall of 2015.
Salubrious
Salubrious, a holistic health and wellness center, opened at 852 Lafayette Road in June 2012. Practitioners offer special events, on-going classes, private sessions, and clinics. They offer health products produced by local artisans that feature only natural ingredients.
Hampton Copy
Hampton Copy at 826 Lafayette Road closed its doors in June 2012. Top Shelf Brews opened at this location a few months later (see above.)
Aquarion Water Company
Aquarion Water Company moved to 7 Scott Road in May 2012 from their previous location at 1 Merrill Industrial Drive.
Still Stillwell's Ice Cream
Still Stillwell's Ice Cream opened in the Plaza at 356 Lafayette Road between Las Olas and Rite Aid on April 27, 2012.
The Community Oven
The Community Oven opened at 845 Lafayette Road on April 13, 2012, in place of the former Brothers North Restaurant. They specialize in wood-fired pizza and are a full-service restaurant and lounge.

Dr. Joni Barrows opened her general dentistry practice at 400 Lafayette Road by April of 2012.
Y&E Ice Cream
The Y&E Ice Cream shop opened its doors at 7 High Street in April 2012. By January of 2013 it was gone.
Ron Jillian's moves
Ron Jillian's Restaurant moved from its long-time home at 822 Lafayette Road into new quarters at 853 Lafayette Road, the former home of the Granite Bank, in April of 2012.
Hampton KatDancin' Studio
Hampton KatDancin' Studio opened at 448 Lafayette Road by March of 2012. By August of 2013 they had moved to 680 Lafayette Road, the former location of Emmith Business Solutions, which had been at that location since September of 2006.
Savory Square Bistro
Savory Square Bistro opened at 32 Depot Square by February of 2012. The restaurant grew out of the Chez Boucher Cooking School and its professional culinary programs.
Seacoast Soap Company
The Seacoast Soap Company opened at 3 High Street in February of 2012. Prior to moving to Hampton they had been located at 150 Lafayette Road in Rye. In December of 2012 they changed their name to Unique Gift Creations. By December of 2013 they were no longer in business at this location.
Mrs. Doolittle's Bath House
Mrs. Doolittle's Bath House opened at 892 Lafayette Road by January of 2012. They provide pet services like grooming, boarding and walking.
Woof
"Woof", a pet nutrition and supply store, opened at 38 Depot Square in early 2012.
ReStyled
ReStyled, a women's clothing and accessory consignment shop, opened in the Hampton Village Plaza mall at 387 Lafayette Road, Unit 108, in August 2011. In January of 2012 they moved a short distance to 446 Lafayette. Prior to their opening this was the location of Live, Laugh, Shop , also a consignment shop. ReStyled went out of business on March 14, 2015.
Hampton Family Dental
Hampton Family Dental opened next to CVS Pharmacy at 321 Lafayette Road by January of 2012. Prior to this time it had been located at 12 Park Avenue since at least 2005.
Some Depot Square businesses
As of December 2011 there were a number of small businesses in Depot Square not mentioned below, but it is not known when they opened. At 32 Depot Square, Unit 5, is Kenko Do Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Next to them at Unit 3 is T. B. O'Kane Global Sourcing. As of the end of 2011 Units 2, 4, 6, and 7 were vacant. At 30 Depot Square is Resee Hair Fashion. At 28 Depot Square, Unit E is Depot Square Used Furniture and Collectibles, and at Unit C is " M The Dog Spa ."
Visions Kitchen + Design
Visions Kitchen + Design opened at 70 High Street Unit 5 by December of 2011. Around a year later they moved to the other side of the building. By October of 2014 they were gone and had been replaced with New England Brand House. (See above)
ReMax On the Move
ReMax On the Move opened a real estate office at 750 Exeter Road in November of 2011.
MaxEdge Fitness
MaxEdge Fitness opened at 6 Merrill Industrial Drive in September 2011. Owned and operated by Jan and Nancy Collins, they offered personalized fitness training classes.
Jamie Gowing Cabinetry
Jamie Gowing Cabinetry opened at 592 Lafayette Road, Suite 2, by September of 2011. They had previously been in business in Greenland since 2005.
(Curtis) Church of Christ
The Curis Church of Christ, David Curtis, Pastor, opened at unit #1 in 38 Depot Square by the summer of 2011.
New England Academy of Music, Language and Art
The New England Academy of Music, Language and Art opened at 4 High Street in August of 2011. They offer private and group lessons in music, art, foreign language, and also do private tutoring.
Maximum Nutrition Centers
Carlos Renfro and Wendy Chadwick opened Maximum Nutrition Centers, Inc. at 15 High Street in July 2011. They sold health food and nutritional supplements. In April of 2015 they closed their doors at this location.
Bai Cha Thai Restaurant / Thai House
The Bai Cha Thai restaurant opened on August 11, 2011 at 442 Lafayette Road, in the location last occupied by the Caffé Fresco. See also . In February of 2016 it was sold to new owners who changed the name to Thai House.
Oceanside Family Dental
Oceanside Family Dental was created in June 2011 and opened at 750 Lafayette Road in place of the "Family Dentistry" office run by Janis Krauss-Krieger, who had been there since 1994.
Seacoast Barbershop & More
Seacoast Barbershop & More opened at 868R Lafayette Road on May 10, 2011, with a grand opening on June 12. This was previously known as the "All About Him" barbershop, which had moved to this location the previous November, but they changed their name when a partnership split up. They offered mens' and womens' cuts as well as massage therapy. It is owned and operated by master barbers Donna West and Brian Gage. By June of 2012 Sandbox Preschool was at this location.
Fitness Revolution
Fitness Revolution opened in the small mall at 845 Lafayette Road on May 1, 2011. It was a health and exercise studio offering group fitness classes and personal training. The facility featured a selection of Cybex and Life Fitness equipment. Parents could exercise while their children were supervised by the child care staff in the play area. Fitness Revolution was owned Sonja and Jim Dearden, and they sold it in August of 2011 to Oliver Cuell. They closed their doors on May 6, 2013 .
Jackson Simpson Real Estate
Jackson Simpson Real Estate at 3 High Street was out of business by May 2011. They had been in business since 1981.
KSU Motorcycle Gear
KSU Motorcycle Gear opened a shop at 852 Lafayette Road by April of 2011. They sell new and used motorcycle clothing and gear. KSU stands for 'Kinda-Sorta-Used'.
Kennedy and Loiseau Real Estate
Kennedy and Loiseau Real Estate opened an office at 400 Lafayette Road by March of 2011.
The History Store
The History Store opened at 442 Lafayette Road in March of 2011. This is the retail location for an international online business for history enthusiasts. Proprietor Bret Burleigh carries a limited inventory in the store but more can be found online. They specialize in books, models and memorabilia focused on American history, world history and military history. In addition to books, they carry William Britain historical figures, Osprey books and a variety of airplane models.
S.J. Dennen, CPA, P.C.
Certified Public Accountant S.J. Dennen opened an office at 400 Lafayette Road by March of 2011. He also has an office in Andover, Mass.
Hubbingtons Furniture
Hubbingtons Classic Furniture Designs opened at 75 Lafayette Road in January 2011.
High Street Smoke Shop
The High Street Smoke Shop opened at 7 High Street in January of 2011. Owner William Garvey carried a variety of colorful pipes intended for tobacco use, along with related accessories. The shop was out of business by January of the following year.
Eric's Barber Shop
Eric's Barber Shop opened at 449 Lafayette Road by December of 2011. Prior to that it had been Bob's Barber Shop for a number of years. Eric's was located in North Hampton for 16 years prior to moving to Hampton.
Superior Mobility & Medical Supply
Superior Mobility & Medical Supply opened at 1 Lafayette Road by November of 2010. They are a full-service mobility and medical supply company that does accessible home modifications, ramp systems, etc., as well as selling wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
Coastal Trust Insurance
Coastal Trust Insurance opened in the small mall at 725 Lafayette Road by November of 2010 they went out of business in early 2011.
All About Him
The All About Him Barbershop at 827 Lafayette Road moved to a new location at 868R Lafayette in November of 2010. In May of 2011 the business partners split up and the business then became known as "Seacoast Barbering and More" (see above.)
Studio 471
Studio 471 appeared at 471 Lafayette Road in November of 2010. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in April 2011. This location was last occupied by Amelia's Bistro (see below).
Headlinerz Barber & Salon
Headlinerz Barber & Salon opened at 852 Lafayette Road by October of 2010.
Epic Oriental Rugs
Epic Oriental Rugs opened at 597 Lafaytete Road by October of 2010. Owned by Suhail Bhatti, it has a 5000 square foot showroom and its services include hand-washing, repair, restoration, moth-proofing and appraisals. This location had been vacant since December 2005 when The Movie Gallery closed its doors here.
Law offices of Jeffrey B. Merrill
Jeffrey Merrill opened a law office at 92 High Street in the Fall of 2010.
People's United Bank
By September of 2010 the Ocean Bank at 853 Lafayette Road had changed to a People's United Bank. This came about because Ocean Bank became a part of the People's United Bank chain some time earlier. Before being an Ocean Bank this bank was known as Granite Bank. The Ocean Bank at 117 Winnacunnet Road was changed to People's United as well. The Lafayette Road branch of the bank was closed by the summer of 2011. Ron Jillian's Restaurant opened at this location in April of 2012.
Harvesting Hermit
The Harvesting Hermit is a new restaurant that opened in mid-summer 2010 in the Toot Sweet Pastry Shoppe building at 33 1/2 Depot Square. They serve mostly sandwiches and salads.
Signature Computers Plus
Signature Computers Plus opened in June of 2010 in the small mall at 868 Lafayette Road, having moved from 200 Lafayette Road in North Hampton. They left at some point in 2012.
Acupuncture Energetics
Acupuncture Energetics opened shop at 92 High Street by June of 2010, having moved from 216 Lafayette Road in North Hampton.
Aqua Paradise Acquires Florida Casual
Aqua Paradise, a provider of pool and spa service, maintenance and equipment recently (around April 2010) acquired Florida Casual at 890 Lafayette Road.
Drinkwater Flowers and Design
Drinkwater Flowers and Design opened at 819 Lafayette Road on April 1, 2010. Owner Angela Bramante operated her business in Hampton Falls for seven years prior to her move to Hampton.
Provident Bank
A new branch of the Provident Bank opened in the CVS Pharmacy building at 321 Lafayette Road in February of 2010.
Las Olas Taqueria
Las Olas Taqueria, a Mexican restaurant, opened in the Brooks Plaza at 356 Lafayette Road on February 3, 2010.
C3: Creative Community Connections
C3: Creative Community Connections opened at 400 Lafayette Road by February of 2010.
Goodbye to Caffé Fresco and Brothers North
The end of 2009 also saw the end to two local restaurants -- Caffé Fresco at 442 Lafayette Road and Brothers North in the new mall at 845 Lafayette Road. Caffé Fresco had been in Hampton since June 2001 (see below) and New Year's Eve was its final day. Brothers North opened in April 2008 (see below) and went out of business around Christmas. There was some talk of Caffé Fresco being reopened under new management by the owners of the Old Salt Restaurant, but those plans never materialized.
Quayle & Congdon Real Estate / Hampton Vision Center
Quayle & Congdon Real Estate at 865 Lafayette Road moved to 55 Hampton Meadows in Hampton at some point during the second half of 2009. Hampton Vision Center moved into their old location by the following Summer following considerable renovations to the building. They had been located at 28E Depot Square for many years.
Toot Sweet Pastry Shoppe
A patisserie known as the Toot Sweet Pastry Shoppe opened at 32 Depot Square in the small building near the railroad overpass on October 8, 2009. It was formerly occupied by a barber shop named Depot Clipper. The shop was opened by Ron Boucher, owner of the neighboring Chez Boucher Culinary Arts Training Center across the parking lot.
Art & Soul Watercolors
Peg Duffin opened Art & Soul Watercolors at 7 High Street in October 2009. That location had been vacant since the Mortage Man vacated around June 2008. The business was gone by the Fall of 2010.
Sign A Rama Seacoast
Sign A Rama Seacoast was located at 102 Tide Mill Road Unit 8 from at least September 2009 until they closed their doors in April 2011. They created signs for businesses and individuals.
CVS Pharmacy
The new CVS Pharmacy that was built in place of the former Hampton Cinemas opened for business in mid-September 2009.
AUI International
The AUI International Insurance Agency opened at 860 Lafayette Road by the summer of 2009. They are based out of Lowell, Mass. By March of 2010 that location was occupied by Brownell Insurance, which had just moved up the street from 852 Lafayette Rd.
JaLill's
JaLill's Permanent Hair Removal opened its doors in the small mall at 868 Lafayette Road by July of 2009, displacing Bead Creative which moved to another location on the southern end of Lafayette Road down by the marshes.
The 3 Sisters Consignment Boutique
The 3 Sisters Consignment Boutique opened in the Brothers North Plaza at 845 Lafayette Road by early June of 2009. They sell upscale, gently used designer brand clothing and home furnishings on consignment.
Hampton Vacuum
Hampton Vacuum opened at 448 Lafayette Road in early June 2009. By February of 2012 it was no longer in that location.
North Beach Massage
Sarah McMahon opened her North Beach Massage studio at 12 High Street at the end of March 2009. By January of 2010 it had moved to 92 High Street.
Widow Fletcher's -> 401 Tavern
Widow Fletcher's Restaurant at 401 Lafayette Road changed ownership in March 2009. After 26 years as the tavern's owner, Parker Ryan is selling the restaurant to Daniel "Desi" Lanio, general manager of La Bec Rouge at Hampton Beach, and several other local restaurateurs. The new name of the restaurant will be the 401 Tavern. Newspaper article .
Hampton Cinemas Six
The Hampton Cinemas Six on Lafayette Road closed its doors the weekend of February 13, 2009 after 29 years in business. The building was torn down during the first week of March to make way for the construction of a CVS Pharmacy and a bank.
Naturally Silk moves
In late 2008 Naturally Silk Interior Plant Design moved from its location at 446 Lafayette Road into the Hampton Village Plaza at 387 Lafayette Road. This location remained vacant until the Fall of 2010 when, in the runup to the November elections, the local Democratic Party used it as their campaign headquarters. After that it remained vacant until January 2012 when ReStyled moved in (see above).
NH Auto Sales
nhautosales.com opened in the small mini-mall at 725 Lafayette Road in November 2008.
Vintage Mills / Village Hoodie
Vintage Mills opened on the bottom floor of the building at 70 High Street in November 2008. They held their grand opening on June 27, 2009. They produce custom destroyed embroidery "hoodie" sweatshirts. In December 2011 they changed their name to Village Hoodie. A year later then were gone, replaced by Visions Kitchen + Design which had moved from the other side of the building. (See above)
JD's Super Beef
JD's SuperBeef opened at 625 Lafayette Road in October 2008. It has been vacant for a year since "Tank's Roast Beef" had gone out of business. Before that it was the location of "O'Grady's Roast Reef". It was no longer in business by February of 2015.
Middleton Building Supply
In October 2008 Bradco Supply Wickes Lumber at 864 Lafayette Road became Middleton Building Supply.
All Approved Mortgage
All Approved Mortgage opened in the small mall at 852 Lafayette Road in October of 2008. It was gone by early 2010.
Lafayette Beauty Salon
Lafayette Beauty Salon opened at 725 Lafayette Road #2 in October 2008.
Atlantic News
The Atlantic News newspaper moved from its location at 893 Lafayette Road to a new location in Salisbury, Mass. on the weekend of September 6-7, 2008. It ceased publication with the August 14, 2009 issue after some 35 years in print.
Brownell Insurance Center
The Brownell Insurance Center moved from its previous location in the small mall at 861 Lafayette Road to a new location across the street at 852 Lafayette by September of 2008. By March of 2010 they had moved again, a few doors down to 860 Lafayette Rd.
Art Experience
Art Experience opened its doors in August 2008 at 17 High Street and closed in May 2014 .
Hampton Town Democratic Committee Campaign office
The Hampton Town Democratic Committee Campaign office opened its doors at 12 High Street on August 30, 2008. This storefront had been vacant for a full year since "A Peaceful Life" went out of business at this location. After the November election the campaign office closed and was vacant until March 2009 when North Beach Massage opened there (see above.)

Cleary Cleaners
In May 2008, Cleary Cleaners moved from its long-time location in the plaza at 356 Lafayette Road to the new Brothers North plaza at 845 Lafayette Road.
Greg's Pizza
Greg's Pizza opened in May 2008 at 445 Lafayette Road, replacing Piazza Pizza which had been operating there since January, 2003. In November of 2010 they got Planning Board approval to expand into the area next door at 441 Lafayette, recently vacated by MetLife Insurance. The renovations were completed by May 2011. They later (by 2014) changed their name to Greg's Bistro. [Historical note: 445 and 443 Lafayette Road seem to have been interchangeable at times. As of 2010 there is no 443, and seemingly no spot where it could even go, between 441 and 445.]
Appledore Arbor
Appledore Arbor, a flower shop, opened at 819 Lafayette Road in May 2008. By April 2010 Drinkwater Flowers and Design was at this location.
Volumes
A new used book store opened in the Spring of 2008 in the Hampton Village Plaza mall at 387 Lafayette Road. The store is called " Volumes " and is owned and operated by Gordon Lane. It was gone at some point in the summer of 2011.
Brothers North
Brothers North Restaurant and Lounge opened on April 1, 2008 at the new plaza that bears its name at 845 Lafayette Road. This 199-seat cafeteria-style Greek and American restaurant was opened by Ted Kougianos, owner of the first Brothers North Restaurant in Danvers, Mass.
Community Bank & Trust Company becomes Ocean Bank
The Community Bank & Trust Company located at 117 Winnacunnet Road became Ocean Bank in March 2008.
Artichokes
Artichokes: The Heart of the Kitchen opened its doors in February or March 2008 at the new Brothers North Plaza located at 845 Lafayette Road. Owned by Lorraine and Bob King of Hampton, this store moved from Breakfast Hill in Greenland. They sell gift baskets, wine, Viking cookware and all types of colorful kitchen accessories.
Spectra Hair & Nails Salon
Spectra Hair & Nails Salon opened its doors in February or March 2008 at the new Brothers North Plaza located at 845 Lafayette Road.
MetLife Insurance Agency
A MetLife Insurance office opened its doors at 441 Lafayette Road around the turn of the year 2007-08. Funny Bones Toys last occupied this location after closing the previous July. In the Fall of 2010 MetLife moved around the corner to 4 High Street.
My Shoe Store
My Shoe Store moved its company headquarters to Hampton, opening a store at 881 Lafayette Road by December 2007. Also known as Lord John's Footwear.com, they first came to the state in 2005 based in Greenland. They vacated their Hampton location in June 2008 and went out of business after getting in trouble with the government for defrauding customers.
Marston Insurance
Marston Insurance opened its office at 38 Depot Square by December of 2007.
The Clipping Post
The Clipping Post Barber Shop opened at 827 Lafayette Road at the end of October 2007. Jon Val Hair Salon (see below) was the last business to operate from this location, having closed the previous June.
Chez Boucher
Chez Boucher, a French culinary school run by chef Ron Boucher, opened a new education facility at 321 Lafayette Road in late August or early September 2007. In December 2008 they left this location next to the soon-to-be-closed Hampton Cinemas and moved into a 3200 square foot facility in the Woodbury Building at 32 Depot Square, Unit 1.
Custom Travel
Custom Travel at 448 Lafayette Road was out of business by the beginning of September 2007.
Wholesale Motor Mart / Charter Auto Sales
Wholesale Motor Mart at 610 Lafayette Road was out of business by the end of August 2007. They had been in business at this location since August 2003. By the following November Charter Auto Sales had opened here.
Brooks to Rite Aid
The Brooks Pharmacy in the Brooks Plaza at 356 Lafayette Road became the Rite Aid Pharmacy in August 2007.
My Child's Closet
My Child's Closet, located at 860 Lafayette Road (in the northernmost unit) was out of business by May or June, 2007.
Seacoast Lyme Center
Seacoast Lyme Center opened at 92 High Street in July or August 2007. They provide service and information regarding Lyme Disease.
5 Element Acupuncture
5 Element Acupuncture opened in the small mall at 540 Lafayette Road by early May 2007. Owner Louis Bornstein previously operated his business out of Exeter. They occupied the space previously held by "Options IN Community Living."
Pro-Med Billing and Paladin Group
Pro-Medbill, a medical billing company, and the Paladin Group (management consultants) moved from their offices at 540 Lafayette Road to new offices in the Foss Manufacturing building at 380 Lafayette Road in mid-2007.
Law Office of Andrew F. Cotrupi
Andrew F. Cotrupi opened his law office in the newly constructed office building at 428 Lafayette Road around May or June 2007.
Brothers North Restaurant
The long vacant lot at 845 Lafayette Road saw activity in the third week of May 2007 as the construction of a new Brothers North restaurant began. This location was last home to Newick's Seafood Restaurant which closed during the winter of 2002/2003 and did not reopen in the Spring. That building was demolished in 2005.
Walk-In Closet
The Walk-In Closet, a clothing consignment shop located at 421 Lafayette Road, was destroyed by fire on May 8, 2007 . The building was torn down on June 20th.
Judy Motors
Judy Motors LLC opened in December 2006 in the small mini-mall at 852 Lafayette Road.
Kriya Yoga Center
The Institute for Personal Development Inc's Kriya Yoga Center opened in the small mini-mall at 725 Lafayette Road in May 2007. Prior to this they had been located at 652 Lafayette Road behind the Peking Chinese Restaurant. The Institute is a Kriya Yoga Ashram that offers classes, services, and a private residential program for anyone interested in self-improvement. This location had been vacant since December 2005 when the last occupant, Youngclaus & Company, closed its doors.
Capable Kids
Capable Kids opened in the small mall at 540 Lafayette Road by April 2007. They were previously located at 4 Merrill Industrial Drive. They are a private occupational therapy practice providing services to children with a variety of learning and developmental difficulties.
Little Vintage Antiques
Little Vintage Antiques opened at 17 High Street in the second week of April 2007 in the location last occupied by Lenz Photography, which closed at the end of 2006. An Atlantic News article on the shop appeared in the April 6th paper . The store was out of business by early March, 2008.
Brightwork Solutions
Brightwork Solutions, a web design company owned by John Raleigh, opened in the small mall at 725 Lafayette Road in March 2007. Prior to this it had been operating out of his home at 139 Woodland Road in Hampton. This location had been vacant since August of 2005 when Lance Holding Company, the previous occupant, closed its doors (see below).
All She Wears
The women's clothing store "All She Wears" moved into the space last occupied by "Accountable Contractors" at 461 Lafayette Road in December 2006. They opened for business during the last week of January, 2007. See this article from the Atlantic News
Sunny Daze Boutique
Sunny Daze Boutique opened at 15 High Street in the 4th week of January 2007. The shop, owned by Laurie and Kevin Kerton, offers women's clothing fashions. The Indulge gift shop was the last store to occupy this location in November. Sunny Daze moved in shortly after Indulge left, but didn't open for several weeks. Their grand opening was held on February 3rd. By the end of November 2007 the store had gone out of business. In the summer of 2009 the Twinkletoes shop at 13 High Street expanded to fill the space of 15 High Street as well. That space was empty again by March of 2010, although Twinkletoes was still operating out of #13 next door until they moved to 80 Lafayette Road in Hampton Falls in July 2015.
Peaceful Life
Peaceful Life, a shop offering home accessories, gifts and yoga essentials, opened at 12 High Street in January 2007. See this article from the Atlantic News . The store went out of business at this location in late August 2007.
Lenz Photography Closes
Lenz Photography at 17 High Street closed at the end of the year 2006. They opened at this location in July 2003 (see below).
Liberty Tax Service/Seacoast Tax Services
In the third week of December 2006 Liberty Tax Service moved into 440 Lafayette Road in the space last occupied by the Bib 'N Crib clothing store, which went out of business in April 2005. (See below) They opened for business in January. See this article from the Atlantic News . By November of 2008 they were renamed to Seacoast Tax Services. After the 2009 tax season, they relocated to the small mall at 540 Lafayette Road.
Appropriate Staffing
Appropriate Staffing opened in December 2006 in the small mini-mall at 852 Lafayette Road. It was gone by early 2010.
Express Video
Express Video, located at 358 Lafayette Road in the Brooks Plaza, closed in the Fall of 2006.
Seacoast Democratic Party Headquarters
The Seacoast Democratic Party campaign headquarters opened in mid-September 2006 in the Brooks Plaza location recently vacated by Hoyt's Stationery. It closed after the election in November.
Present Perfect
Present Perfect, a gift boutique originally located in Rye, opened in the location vacated by Colt News Store at 457 Lafayette Road in mid-September 2006. Their grand opening was held on October 14th. See these article from the Atlantic News and the Hampton Union

isoldmystuffhere.com opened a storefront at 12 High Street in September 2006. They sold items on eBay for their customers. The storefront was vacant by the end of November.
Emmith Business Solutions
Emmith Business Solutions took over the space last occupied by Coastal Bookkeeping at 608 Lafayette Road in August 2006. They were gone by August 2013.
Brumby Saddlery & Cactus City Boots
Cactus City Boot and Saddlery at 826 Lafayette Road came under new ownership in August 2006 and was renamed Brumby Saddlery and Cactus City Boots.
Bradco Supply / Wickes Lumber
Wickes Lumber at 864 Lafayette Road changed its name to Bradco Supply Wickes Lumber in July of 2006. In October 2008 it became Middleton Building Supply (see above).
FunnyBones Toys closes
Funny Bones toy store at 441 Lafayette Road closed in July 2006 after having been open since 1998 .
Committed Customs
Committed Customs opened at 610 Lafayette Road in the same building as Dollar Bill's Automotive Services in June 2006. They do custom auto painting, and body customization and repairs.
Hoyt's Stationery
After 32 years in business, Hoyt's Stationery in the Route One Brooks Plaza closed its doors on May 27, 2006. They had been losing business over the past several years to the numerous Staples-type big-box stationery stores that were popping up around the seacoast. The Brooks Plaza was recently sold to Linear Retail Properties, but this was not the reason for their closure. Hoyt's also has a store in Portsmouth and its inventory was all moved to that location.
Best Western The Inn of Hampton
The Inn of Hampton at 815 Lafayette Road became part of the Best Western chain of hotels in May 2006 and is now known as the "Best Western The Inn of Hampton."
Shell Station Closes
After 35 years of operation, the Hampton Shell Station at 349 Lafayette Road closed on April 28, 2006. At first there were plans to open a Starbuck's coffee shop in this location, but those plans fell through. The site remained long vacant, surrounded by a chain-link fence. A notice in the December 14, 2007 Hampton Union read "The former Shell Gas Station on 349 Lafayette Road may again be home to a gas station. Anthony Guba, of Ayoub Engineering Inc., came before the Planning Board last week to get feedback on the possibility of the A.L. Prime Company moving to that location. The board said it had no problem with [the] proposed project." This never came about. At one point the Board of Selectmen asked Shell to donate the land for a public park , but Shell declined. The fence surrounding the property was eventually torn down, but the building remained long vacant. Shell decided to offer it for lease as of August 2011.
Accountable Contractors
Accountable Contractors opened at 461 Lafayette Road in early April 2006 in the location recently vacated by Stoneweaver Books. They were gone by the end of November.
Jay the Mortgage Man
In April of 2006, Carteret Mortgage of 15 High Street moved a few doors down to 7 High Street, sharing space with "Modular Home Designs". Within a month signs for Carteret and Modular Home Designs were gone and the business was now called "Jay the Mortgage Man." The site was last occupied by The Fuller Brush Team and More. By June of 2008 the mortgage man was no longer in business at this location.
Antique Shoppes of Hampton
Jean Boudreau, owner of Antique Shoppes of Hampton located at 65 Lafayette Road, got permission from the Hampton Planning Board on March 15, 2006 to change the business to a lobster pound and fish market.
Shear Delight
Shear Delight opened in the small mall at 868 Lafayette Road by March of 2006.
Tyler's Sweet Revenge
Tyler Lakin opened Tyler's Sweet Revenge, makers of "devilishly delicious jams and jellies", at 7 Kershaw Ave., Unit 1, in March 2006.
Salvation Army Moves Again
In March 2006 the local offices of the Salvation Army moved into the vacant space at 418 Lafayette Road, last occupied by the Savin Corporation in the Spring of 2005. Prior to this the Salvation Army was located next to the Baptist Church (see below).
Provisions
Construction began on March 14, 2006 on an addition to the first floor lobby of the Galley Hatch Restaurant at 325 Lafayette Road. They will be opening a store called 'Provisions', which will serve as the new home of the Hatch's bakery goods and also be a retail food store. More on this appeared in the Hampton Union , of March 3, 2006 . In April of 2012 the Galley Hatch changed "Provisions" into a new cafe where they have a full bakery, cappuccinos, lattes, and breakfast wraps, calling it "Kay's Kafe," (named after Kay Tinios.)
New Condominium building
Groundbreaking for a new condominium building took place in March 2006 at 430 Lafayette Road. Construction began in earnest on May 9th. This is the site of the former Odd Fellows Building, which burned on January 27, 1990 and had remained vacant ever since.
C-Shore Appliance
C-Shore Appliance sales and service opened at 699 Lafayette Road in mid-March 2006. This was formerly home to Annie's Book Stop until April of the previous year. It was out of business by late 2013.
Me & Ollie's
Me & Ollie's Cafe and Bakery opened in the former 7-Eleven building at 61 High Street on March 10, 2006. This chain also has locations in Exeter, Portsmouth and Newburyport and is owned by Roger and Beth Elkus. An article on the shop appeared in the March 17, 2006 Atlantic News . They closed abruptly at the end of November 2011.
Depot Square Automotive
Depot Square Automotive opened in the back of the large building at 38 Depot Square by early March 2006. This was the repair service that originally ran out of the Shell Service station at the corner of Lafayette and Winnacunnet Road.
Flags Unlimited and Browse-About Furniture Etc.
Flags Unlimited of 822 Lafayette Road was out of business as of January 2006, when a "For Rent" sign appeared in the window. By the beginning of March, "Browse-About Furniture, Etc.", a used furniture store, had opened in its place. Browse-About was gone by late June 2007, and "Music Makers", which had been next door, moved into the vacated space. Music Makers moved to North Hampton in late April 2012.
Accents in Glass
This stained glass craft shop opened its doors on the bottom floor of the building at 70 High Street in January 2006. An article on the shop appeared in the March 17, 2006 Atlantic News and the June 13, 2006 Hampton Union. They moved to 44 Lafayette Road in North Hampton in the Fall of 2008. They had an open house there on October 23rd. .
Coastal Bookkeeping
Coastal Bookkeeping, which had occupied the spot next to Hoaty's Restaurant at 680 Lafayette Road since the Spring of 2004, was gone by January 2006, when a big "For Rent" sign appeared in the window.
Colt News
Colt's News Store at 457 Lafayette Road closed on December 31, 2005 and began a going out of business sale for several months, selling off inventory and fixtures. Youngevity Spa / Body Intelligence
Youngevity Spa , a wellness clinic, opened at 32 Depot Square in 2005. Until June 2005 this location was home to the Hampton Union newspaper before they moved their offices to Stratham. In October 2006 Youngevity Spa changed their name to Body Intelligence.
Youngclaus & Co.
Youngclaus & Company, PLLC, Certified Public Accountants, closed up shop in their 725 Lafayette Road office in December 2005 and moved to 65 Lafayette Road, Suite 102, in North Hampton.
Movie Gallery
The Movie Gallery at 597 Lafayette Road closed in December 2005. It had been in business at this location since August of 1998 in a newly constructed building. It remained vacant until the fall of 2010 when Epic Oriental Rugs opened at this location (see above.)
Strolz/Kneissl Ski Boots -- Company website
Strolz/Kneissl North America, LLC, an Austrian company that makes custom fit ski boots, opened a shop at 400 Lafayette Road in late November or early December. Read an article on the company from the February 24, 2006 issue of the Atlantic News .
Jumpin' Jack's Java Double Express Drive Thru
John Birmbas opened this coffee and donut shop at 836 Lafayette Road in December 2005. He constructed a small new drive-through building on the site during the Fall, while all summer long a truck with the Jumpin' Jack's logo on it was parked out front of the future building site. See articles from the Atlantic News and the Hampton Union . They opened a branch at the beach at 333 Ocean Blvd. in the summer of 2009. The in-town location became Aroma Joe's in March 2014.
Amelia's Bistro
By the third week of November 2005, Just Gen's Sandwich Shop and More at 471 Lafayette Road had been replaced by Amelia's Bistro. Story in the September 8, 2006 Atlantic news . Amelia's went out of business at the end of May 2010.
Indulge
After Luna Chics departed 12 High Street in August, a new shop named Indulge Bath & Body opened in its place in mid-November of 2005. Jay and Donna Portinari's store specialized in handmade, all-natural, animal-friendly soaps and bath products, as well as other assorted gift products. See article from the Atlantic News of December 9, 2005 . In early April 2006 they moved across the street to 15 High Street into the location last occupied by Carteret Mortgage. They only lasted a few months, however, going out of business on November 14th.
Chivers North America
Chivers North America, a publisher of large print books and audiobook titles, vacated its 1 Lafayette Road (Bldg #4) offices at the end of October 2005 and moved to Rhode Island. They are affiliated with the British company Chivers Press, and published mostly British titles. Their audiobooks were recorded in a studio at the Hampton location. It was bought in 2001 by BBC Audiobooks.
7-Eleven
By the end of October November 2005, the local 7-Eleven convenience store at 61 High Street had boarded up its windows and gone out of business. The store had been in business at this location since about 1973 or 74. This was discussed in an article in the Hampton Union, November 4, 2005 . Me & Ollie's Cafe and Bakery (see above) opened here the following March.
Pottery At Your Place, The Studio
Pottery At Your Place opened on the bottom floor of the building at 70 High Street in October 2005. Nearly a year later they held a grand opening . This location is the former home of the Hampton Child and Family Services Program Village Preschool, which moved at the end of July.
Hess Express
The US Gas Station at 641 Lafayette Road changed its name to Hess Express in the first week of August 2005. Later they began selling food through the side businesses of "Godfather's Pizza" and "Blimpie Subs and Salads".
Susan's Hampton Citgo
The Hampton Citgo service station at 567 Lafayette Road became known as "Susan's Hampton Citgo" by the first week of August, 2005. The station was out of business by the end of March 2006, but by the late April of 2007 a Citgo gas station was once again in operation.
Tank's Roast Beef
By the first of August, 2005, O'Grady's Roast Beef at 625 Lafayette Road was now called "Tank's Roast Beef". Tank's went out of business on October 28, 2007. A year later this same location became "JD's Super Beef" (see above).
Hampton Village Preschool
At the end of July, 2005, The Hampton Child and Family Services Program Village Preschool moved from its home on the bottom floor at 70 High Street, where it had been since 1994, to a new location just down the road, in the lower level of Trinity Episcopal Church at 200 High St. This classroom space was formerly occupied by the Aslan's Pride Nursery School. Hagan's Grill
Sean and Cara Kelley, the first owners of Caffe Fresco, took over the former Atlantic Grill at 8 High Street in July 2005 and after renovating the location opened a new restaurant on July 27th called "Hagan's Grill". It is named after the couple's two daughters, Hanna and Morgan. Atlantic Grill closed only a short time before the renovations began. See the Hampton Union article from July 22, 2005.
Stoneweaver Bookstore
Rob Pondelli opened a new bookstore at 461 Lafayette Road in mid-July 2005, occupying the space that housed Seacoast Coin and Jewelry until last March. (See below) This was the first general bookstore to open in Hampton in recent memory. See the Hampton Union article from July 22, 2005, and the Herald Sunday article from July 24, 2005. The store went out of business during the second weekend of March, 2006. The owner says he moved the business online and sell from his home. In April 2006 Accountable Contractors opened in this location (see above).
Verticals, Etc. moved
By July of 2005, Verticals, Etc. had moved from its location at 822 Lafayette Road in Hampton to a new location at 122 Lafayette Road in North Hampton. Owner Ed Hopkins had been operating from the Hampton location for 12 years. They sell window fashions such as blinds, draperies and shutters. Ron Jillian's Brick Oven Tavern expanded into the newly vacated space from their existing quarters in behind, giving them more visibility from Route One.
Sandbox Preschool
Sandbox Preschool opened in July 2005 at 830 Lafayette Road. They held an Open House on July 13th with a Grand Opening scheduled in September for the 2005/2006 school year. The Sandbox is a preschool program that focuses on social and academic development essential for Kindergarten. an August 5, 2005 Atlantic News article discusses the new school. As of June 10, 2012 they had moved to a new location further up the road at 868R Lafayette Road.
Savin Corporation/Transco South
The Savin Corporation located at 418 Lafayette Road, formerly known as Transco South, closed its doors at this location in the Spring of 2005. They sold and serviced photocopy machines.
Jon Val Hair Salon
The Jon Val Hair Salon opened at 827 Lafayette Road in May of 2005. This was formerly the location of Stylin' with Kathy Jo and the Bella Gente hair salon. By June of 2007 it was no longer in business at this location.
TD Banknorth
The Bank of New Hampshire corporation, with a branch located at 40 High St. in Hampton, changed its name to TD Banknorth on May 23, 2005. In March of 2005, shareholders approved the sale of 51% interest in the company to the Toronto-Dominion Bank, which together with its subsidiaries comprised TD Bank Financial Group.
Bib 'N Crib
The Bib 'N Crib children's clothing store at 440 Lafayette Road went out of business in mid-April of 2005. The store remained vacant until December 2006 when Liberty Tax Service (see above) opened at this location.
Help-U-Sell
In late April 2005, Help-U-Sell, a local branch of a nationwide real estate sales company, opened its doors at 852 Lafayette Road in the place of the Gold and Diamond Trading Center. See this Atlantic News article . They had gone out of business by September of 2007 when their sign came down.
Salon Sheri / Salon Sara
Salon Sheri opened in the small mall at 852 Lafayette Road in late winter 2005, replacing Northern Lights Massage. By May 2007 it was called Salon Sara, owned by Sara Pennfield.
Seacoast Coin and Jewelry
Seacoast Coin and Jewelry at 461 Lafayette Road moved in March 2005 to a new location in the small mall at 725 Lafayette Road. Seacoast Firearms, which had previously occupied that location, went out of business at the end of February 2005. See the Hampton Union article from July 22, 2005.

Extreme Fitness Equipment opened in the small mall at 868 Lafayette Road by February of 2005.
Just Gen's Sandwich Shop and More
Just Gen's Sandwich Shop and More opened in December 2004 at 471 Lafayette Road in place of the Tommy Gone Loco sandwich shop (see below). By the third week of November 2005, Just Gen's had been replaced by Amelia's Bistro (see above).
Eight Winds Wellness Center & Spa
The Eight Winds Wellness Center & Spa opened in December 2004 adjacent to Hampton Natural Foods in the newly constructed building at 580 Lafayette Road. 2005 Atlantic News article H2O Salon of Hampton was in this location by the end of 2010.
Ron Jillian's Brick Oven Tavern
This new restaurant opened at the rear of 822 Lafayette Road in November of 2004. In July of 2005 they expanded into the front part of the building into the area previously occupied by Verticals, Etc. (see above).
Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins
A new Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins store opened at 369 Lafayette Road in early November 2004. The law offices of Mittelholzer Ferrini & Dibble, PLLC, previously occupied this site, which was known as the " Hampton Professional Building" . From 1962 to 1985 it was the site of the Hampton Post Office . The building underwent extensive renovations prior to its opening as a bakery and ice cream shop. The Baskin Robbins part of the business didn't last long.
Bead Creative
Cathi Remington opened a beading and knitting class business at 868 Lafayette Road in November 2004. See also the Atlantic News article " Hampton Chamber Welcomes New Bead Boutique ". By July of 2009 they had moved from this location to a new location on the southern end of Lafayette Road down by the marshes.
Prime Time Video
Prime Time Video, located at 24 Stickney Terrace, closed it's doors on November 13, 2004.
Infor Global Solutions
Lilly Software, located at 500 Lafayette Road, was sold in mid-October 2004 to the Georgia-based Infor Global Solutions and has changed its name at its Hampton location to Infor. Infor closed its doors in Hampton on August 14, 2009 and left for Portsmouth. The building in which they were located was torn down in March of 2011 after having remained vacant since Infor left. This building was constructed in 1959 to house a First National Supermarket .
Lance Holding Company
This real estate holding company opened in late September 2004 in the small mall at 725 Lafayette Road in the former home of MMK Real Estate Professionals, which had closed more than a month earlier (see below). By August of 2005 it was no longer in business at this location.
Carteret Mortgage Company and The Fuller Brush Team and More
Carteret Mortgage Company moved from its previous location at 29 Exeter Road into new quarters at 15 High Street in August of 2004. Prior to August of 2004 the "Fuller Brush Team and More" occupied this location until some time in July (see below), then either went on hiatus or moved to a new location before showing up again a few doors down at 7 High Street in March 2005. 7 High Street was previously home to the Sakon Art Gallery, which had been there for several years. Fuller Brush was gone by early April 2006 and was replaced by Modular Home Designs, then, shortly therafter, by "Jay the Mortgage Man" (see above).
Curves
Curves , a fitness center, opened its doors in the former Sanel Auto Parts building at 38 Depot Square in July of 2004. By December of 2010 it was gone.
Hampton Physical Therapy
Hampton Physical Therapy opened at 881 Lafayette Road in 2004.
VIP Mortgage Corporation
VIP Mortgage moved from 387 Lafayette Road to 70 High Street in the summer of 2004.
MKK Real Estate Professionals
MKK Real Estate Professionals at 725 Lafayette Road closed its shop at this location by the beginning of August 2004. Lance Holding Company opened in this space in late Sepatember (see above).
Wilbur's Family Dining
Wilbur's Family Dining moved from its long-time location in North Hampton to new quarters at 881 Lafayette Road in Hampton, opening on Monday, July 12, 2004. This was previously the site of the Crust & Crumb Bakery and the Upper Crust Restaurant. The owner's name is Wilbur Forbes.
C & T Discount
C & T Discount, a variety store offering gift and party items, toys, seasonal and household goods, books, stationery, etc. opened in June 2004 at 1 Lafayette Road in Hampton. The owner's name is Tom Shek.
SM Richardson
SM Richardson, a business specializing in fabrication and installation of fine custom cabinetry as well as commercial casework, opened at the rear of 592 Lafayette Road in May 2004 . This was formerly the location of Ya Ya's Salon, which moved to another location (see below).
The Pastry Garden
The Pastry Garden opened at 836 Lafayette Road in April 2004, taking the place of a bakery called "Sweet Flours". Articles appeared in the Hampton Union on April 13, 2004 and the Atlantic News on April 15, 2004.
Busy Beads and Coastal Bookkeeping
Busy Beads, a jewelry, gifts and doll specialties shop, opened at 680 Lafayette Road in the late winter of 2004, replacing "AAA Rooter and Plumbing" which had formerly occupied this site. It was gone by the Spring of 2004, replaced by Coastal Bookkeeping , whose owner Jo Ann O'Neil moved here from another location in Hampton.
MMT Performance
MMT Performance, an automobile servicing and equipment store formerly located at 60 Lafayette Road in North Hampton, opened in the late winter of 2004 behind Joe's New York Style Pizza & Brew at 888 Lafayette Road. They were no longer in business at this location by early August 2004.
Ya Ya's Salon
YaYa's Salon, a tanning salon, moved from its old location at 592 Lafayette Road, north to a new location at 892 Lafayette in March of 2004.
Annie's Book Stop
A branch of the Annie's Book Stop used bookstore franchise opened at 699 Lafayette Road in February/March of 2004. The House of Travel was previously located at this address, having vacated it the previous summer (see below). By April of 2005 Annie's had gone out of business. This location remained vacant until May 2006 when it was occupied by C-Shore Appliance (see above).
Karl's Foreign Motors
Sometime between the summer of 2003 and the summer of 2004 the Getty gas and service station at 747 Lafayette Road closed and Karl's Foreign Motors opened in that location. The Getty sign remained but the gas pumps were closed and a small sign for Karl's Foreign Motors was propped against the front of the building.
Fast Eddie's
Billed as a family diner, this restaurant opened in the former Pizza Hut building at 320 Lafayette Road in February 2004. A writeup appeared in the Atlantic News on March 11, 2004 .
Hampton Natural Foods
Hampton Natural Foods moved from its old location at 321 Lafayette Road (next to the Hampton Cinemas) to a newly constructed facility at 580 Lafayette Road in December of 2003. Read more in this Dec. 30th Hampton Union article . Also see Natural Foods Is A Natural Fit and this article from the February 26th Atlantic News . In November 2013 they moved to a new location at 845 Lafayette Road, Suite 1. They held their grand opening there in January 2014.
Fame to Frame
This new digital photography shop opened in the small mall at 868 Lafayette Road in the fall of 2003. An article appeared in the March 16, 2004 Hampton Union as well as in the April 8, 2004 Atlantic News .
Elements of Taste
Hutchinson's Candy moved into Hampton at 893 Lafayette Road, sharing a building with the Atlantic News, in October of 2003. They have expanded their candy kitchen to now include their first retail store called "Elements of Taste". This is a little shop that features old style candy and unique chocolates unavailable in many traditional candy stores. They have a variety of speciality foods and gifts, among other product offerings. The proprietor is John Watkins. See the Hampton Union , article from November 25, 2003 and also, an article from December 11, 2003 issue of Atlantic News.
Dr. Barton E. McGirl
Dr. Barton E. McGirl, DDS, opened an office at 30 High St. in the summer of 2003. This location was formerly home to Beaureve Beauty Salon. The Hampton Union published an article about the new office in its October 28, 2003 issue.
Bella Gente
Bella Gente, a professional hair color and design salon, opened in the summer of 2003 at 827 Lafayette Road in the same quarters as "Stylin With Kathy Jo", another professional hair and skin care business. Prior to this they were located in the Stoneleigh Park Plaza in North Hampton. By late winter of 2005 Bella Gente was no longer in this location, and by May 2005 only the Jon Val Hair Salon was located here. (See above.)
Two new businesses at 324 Lafayette Road
In the summer of 2003 two new businesses opened next door to the Wok Express Chinese restaurant in a small mall at 324 Lafayette Road. Elizabeth's One-Stop Alteration Shop, a clothing tailor shop, and " Hammer & The Last " shoe repair shop, are the new tenants. Prior to this time a branch office of PDT Architects was located here, and long before was a coin-op laundry.
House of Travel moves out of town
In the summer of 2003 the House of Travel, a travel agency, moved its offices from its 699 Lafayette Road location to a new location in Newburyport. The House of Travel opened at 846 Lafayette Road between 1972 and 1978, and by 1982 had moved a short distance to 838 Lafayette. They moved to their final Hampton location between the summer of 2000 and the summer of 2001. Annie's Book Stop opened here in the late winter of 2004 (see above).
Three New Merrill Block Business
In the summer of 2003 three new businesses opened in the Merrill Block, the building on the south side of High Street nearest Route One. At No. 13, a dance shoes and accessories store named "Twinkletoes" opened in August. They were in business at this location until July of 2015 when they moved to 80 Lafayette Road in Hampton Falls. At No. 15, "The Fuller Brush Team and More" set up shop in July, and in that same month, at No. 17, "Lenz Photography" went into business, owned by Lenny Willis. The Fuller Brush Team was owned by Jeff and Ellen Travers and carried Fuller Brush products as well as Stanley Homeware. Sometime in July 2004 the store went out of business at this location, but reopened the following March just a few doors away at 7 High Street (see above). The Salvation Army was the former resident at 15 High Street, and they moved to 34 Winnacunnet Rd ., next to the Baptist Church. They moved again in the late winter of 2006 (see above).
US Gas
In March of 2003 the building housing Harbor Auto and Tally Hoe Antiques at 641 Lafayette Rd. (on the corner of Kershaw Avenue) was torn down to make way for the construction of a new gas station and convenience store to be called US Gas. US Gas opened for business in the Spring of 2004. It changed its name to Hess Express in August 2005 (see above). Harbor Auto was formerly home to Atlantic Motor Mart. Prior to those two businesses Hackett Chevrolet, and before 1944, Gale's Garage occupied this spot. In July of 2003, Tally Hoe Antiques and Wallace Realty, another business formerly located at 641 Lafayette Road, opened new in new quarters at 892 Lafayette Road.
Piazza Pizza
Piazza Pizza, owned and operated by Ehab Abedalazia, opened at 445 Lafayette Road (former site of Jo's Sit & Sip and the Honey Bee Donut Shop) on January 15, 2003. Abedalazia also owns the Via Via, a seasonal pizzeria on Ocean Boulevard at Hampton Beach. Read more in an article in the Atlantic News , Feb 6, 2003, p.12A . During the summer of 2003 the downtown shop was closed because the owner was unable to find sufficient staff to operate both this shop and his beach pizzeria. It had reopened by Fall. By May of 2008 the shop went by the name of Greg's Pizza (see above.) [Historical note: 445 and 443 Lafayette Road seem to have been interchangeable at times. As of 2010 there is no 443, and seemingly no spot where it could even go, between 441 and 445.]
Haven Healthcare comes to Hampton
On December 1, 2002 Partridge House at 777 Lafayette Road and the Seacoast Health Center, behind Partridge House at 22 Tuck Road, became members of the Haven Healthcare family of rehabilitative and elder care facilities. Partridge House retained its name but the Seacoast Health Center, owned by the Trahan family for over 30 years, became the "Haven Health Center at Seacoast". Daniel Trahan remains as the administrator. Partridge House, originally designed as an Alzheimer's facility, is now an Assisted Living Facility, the first such facility to come under the ownership of Haven Healthcare. In 2009 the Haven Health Center at Seacoast changed its name to the Oceanside Center.
Newick's Seafood Restaurant
Newick's Seafood Restaurant at 845 Lafayette closed during the winter of 2002/2003 and did not reopen in the Spring. For more see the Hampton Union article of April 27, 2003 . The building was put on the market by the owner and slowly demolished for parts in the Spring and Summer of 2005. Newick's opened around 1979 or 1980 as Newick's Fisherman's Landing. By 1991 it had changed it's name to Newick's Seafood Restaurant. This building was first built in the mid-1950's for Hampton's first supermarket. Warren K. Sawyer operated "Warren's Supermarket" here from at least 1958 to the early 1960s. By 1965 Harold N. Eames, Jr. had opened his Eames House Furniture store at this location.
Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut at 320 Lafayette Road closed in 2002, having been in business at that location since the mid-1970s. In February 2004 a family diner called "Fast Eddie's" opened here (see above).
Ross Apartments expand -- View construction photo -- View finished building
The Ross elderly housing apartments on Winnacunnet Road expanded in the fall of 2002 with the construction of a new housing unit immediately adjacent to Winnacunnet road.
The Village at Hampton Center
In the fall of 2002 a road was cut through from Route One that curves around behind the Widow Fletcher's Tavern. "The Village at Hampton Center" elderly housing units are being built behind the restaurant, and an underground tunnel through to the restaurant is planned.
Bluebay Terrace adult condominium community
Bluebay Terrace is the name of a adult condominium community behind the Burger King restaurant on Route One. It's address is 597-R Lafayette Road. This single-structure condominium complex was being built in the fall of 2002 and winter of 2003.
Hannaford
The "Super Shop 'N Save" supermarket at 630 Lafayette Road changed its name to Hannaford Food and Drug in summer 2002.
Peking Chinese Restaurant
The former Handy Dan's convenience store at 650 Lafayette Rd. became the Peking Chinese Restaurant in the summer of 2002.
Tommy Gone Loco
The "Tommy Gone Loco" restaurant was opened at 471 Lafayette Road by Tommy Callan on April 8, 2002. A story appears in the Hampton Union, April 23, 2002 . The restaurant went out of business in December of 2004 and was replaced by another restaurant called "Just Gen's Sandwich Shop and More" (see above).
Luna Chics
Luna Chics, a gift and card shop, opened at 12 High St. in the Spring of 2002. It closed in August 2005 and moved to Exeter.
Friendly Nails
Friendly Nails opened at 447 Lafayette Road in the winter of 2002. This site was formerly occupied by McDormand's Men's Wear, which closed about a year earlier. (See below)
Hampton Cityland Farms
The Cumberland Farms store at 355 Lafayette Road, in business since at least 1972, changed its name to Hampton Cityland Farms in the winter of 2002. Cityland Farms closed its doors at the end of the year 2011. The building it occupied was torn down on October 18, 2012 to make way for a Kennebunk Savings Bank.
Jo's Sit & Sip
Jo's Sit & Sip restaurant and coffee shop opened at 443 Lafayette Road on February 15, 2002 in the spot formerly occupied by Honey Bee Donuts since 1981 or 1982. It was opened by Hampton resident Jo Vitale, and a story appears in the Hampton Union, April 16, 2002 . [It closed its doors in June or July 2002 after an unsuccessful run since February 2002.] [Historical note: 445 and 443 Lafayette Road seem to have been interchangeable at times. As of 2010 there is no 443, and seemingly no spot where it could even go, between 441 and 445.]
Robert K. Gray, Jr., Funeral Home
The Robert K. Gray, Jr., Funeral Home opened in January 2002 on the site of the former Friendly's Restaurant at 24 Winnacunnet Road. Friendly's closed in January 2001 and extensive renovations were made to the building over the next twelve months. (For more information on the Gray Funeral Home, see the article in Hampton Union , Sunday, March 17, 2002, written by Larissa Mulkern and also You Will Find Peace of Mind At The Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home , Atlantic News written by Ian Nadeau, Thursday, March 21, 2002.) They went out of business some time in 2011.
Crust & Crumb Bakery and Café
The Crust & Crumb Bakery and Café opened in January 2001 at 881 Lafayette Road, right next door to HamptonHealth in the Bailey Building . It is a family-run business by David and Shary Keimach, with daughters Jaclyn & Rachel "holding fort" on the weekends. (For more information on the Crust & Crumb, see the article in The Hampton Union , Tuesday, December 18, 2001, written by Colleen Lent.) On July 20, 2003 the owners closed the bakery and reopened it in mid-August as a restaurant known as " The Upper Crust ", which closed its doors a few months later.
Caffé Fresco & Gourmet Foods
" Caffé Fresco & Gourmet Foods" opened at 442 Lafayette Road on June 25, 2001 and is owned and operated by Cara Grasso and Sean Kelley. (For more information on the Caffé Fresco, see the article in the Atlantic News , Thursday, November 21, 2001, page 10, or the article in the Hampton Union , November 27, 2001, p.B9.) In the Fall of 2002 they expanded their restaurant into the vacant space adjacent to their existing shop. This space was formerly the site of the Bib 'N Crib shop, which has itself moved next door. [Bib 'N Crib closed in mid-April 2005 (see above)]. Read the article in the Herald Sunday, November 24, 2002 for more information, as well as a related article on one of the former occupants of the space, the First National Store. There was a change in ownership at the "Caffe Fresco & Gourmet Foods" on October 31, 2003. The new owners are Al & Wendy Szymczycha who reside in Hampton Falls, NH. They went out of business at the end of 2009.
The Kitchen At Depot Square
'The Kitchen at Depot Square' (formerly 'Lil's Grille') opened on August 2, 2001, under the new ownership of Andy & Susan Piesik, and Andy's sister Debbie Anderson. (For additional information, see Atlantic News , August 30, 2001, p. 6, and The Hampton Union , October 16, 2001.)
Lil's Grill sold
Lil's Grille at 20 Depot Square closed at the end of July, 2001, after five years in business. Owned by Lil and David Hammarstrom, it was in the same building that for many years housed the "Depot Deli". (See the Atlantic News , July 26, 2001, p.9 for more information.) The restaurant reopened promptly under a new name and new ownership (see above).
Bontá Restaurant -- View photo
This new Italian restaurant was constructed at 287 Exeter Rd. throughout most of the year 2001, and opened in the late summer. Prior to its construction a residential home was located on this site, which is located on the north side of Exeter Road between the bridges over Highways 95 and 101. They closed their doors on June 14, 2014.
The Old Salt Restaurant -- Restaurant website
The Higgins family, owners and operators of "The Old Salt Eating & Drinking Place" for 13 years at Hampton Beach until fire consumed the restaurant in the summer of 1999, have purchased " Lamie's Inn and Tavern ." After negotiating with the owners of for months the sale of the Hampton landmark was affected in February 2001. The restaurant opened for business a few weeks later.( See the article in the Hampton Union , February 27, 2001, for more information.)
Friendly's Restaurant
Friendly's Restaurant, located at 24 Winnacunnet Road since 1975, closed its doors during the last week of January 2001. The move came about due to declining sales and the subsequent re-organization by its parent company. (See the Hampton Union, Feb. 2, 2001 , p.1.) During the summer and fall of 2001 the building underwent renovations to become a funeral home (see Robert K. Gray, Jr. Funeral Home above).
Hampton Playhouse
After 52 years the Hampton Playhouse on Winnacunnet Road was demolished on February 1, 2001. An August 1999 production of "South Pacific" was the last show performed in the historic structure. The production entity known as " The Hampton Playhouse " continues to produce shows on the stage at the Winnacunnet High School in Hampton. A housing subdivision is expected to be built on the site of the Playhouse. (For more see the Hampton Union , Jan. 30, 2001 , p.1 and Feb. 2, 2001 , p.1. and Atlantic News , Feb. 1, 2001 , p.4.)
C-Coast Cyber Cafe
The C-Coast Cyber Cafe opened at 471 Lafayette Road in early 2001. Run by Erin Candiano and her father Peter Doonan, they offered a high speed direct link to the Internet with your coffee and bagel or muffin. Raylene's Backstage Salon formerly occupied this site. (See Herald Sunday Feb 4, 2001 , p.1.) The Cyber Cafe went out of business in the winter of 2001/2002 and in April of 2002 was replaced by the "Tommy Gone Loco" restaurant (see above).
McDormand's Men's Wear
Joan McDormand is closing her downtown men's wear store that she first opened with her husband Harry in 1954. (See Hampton Union Nov 21, 2000 , p.1, and Atlantic News Nov. 16, 2000, p.1.) A year or so later this site became the home of Friendly Nails (see above).
Gordon's Shoe Store up for sale
After 20 years in the retail shoe business, Bob Gordon, owner of Gordon's Shoe Store at 442 Lafayette Road in downtown Hampton, has decided to retire and the 30-year old business bearing his name is up for sale. (See Atlantic News , Nov 2, 2000, p.1 and Hampton Union Nov 21, 2000 , p.1.) The Caffé Fresco & Gourmet Foods opened at this location on June 25, 2001. (See above)
Naturally Silk
Naturally Silk moved from its location at the back of Depot Square to 446 Lafayette Road, former home of the Prep Shop (see below) in March 2000.
A new furniture store in town
The James M. Taylor & Co. Furniture and Accessories Gallery moved its Newington store to 75 Lafayette Road in Hampton. The store was scheduled to open on October 30, 1999. (See the Atlantic News , October 21, 1999, p.6.)
Hoyt's Office Products expands
Over the weekend of October 23-24, 1999, Hoyt's Office Products, located in the Brooks Plaza at 352 Lafayette Rd., expanded its store into the neighboring office formerly occupied by the Exeter Hampton Electric Company.
Scott Pontiac changes ownership
In October of 1999 Dreher-Holloway, an Exeter automobile dealership, purchased Scott Pontiac GMC, Inc. at 169 Lafayette Road in Hampton. Begun as a small service station opened in 1945 by Theodore Scott , this has been a Pontiac dealership since 1948. (See the article on page one of the October 15th Hampton Union .)
Prep Shop to close its doors
After 27 years in business at 446 Lafayette Rd. the Prep Shop, a children's clothing store geared to girls' 7-16 sizes and boys' 8-20, is going to close. Owners Nancy and Bob Gordon are scaling back their business interests in an attempt to retire. They also own the neighboring Bib 'n Crib Shoppe and Gordon's Shoe Store. The Bib 'n Crib, another specialty children's clothing store for infants and younger children, is up for sale but will be sold as a going business. They are also owners of the building in which these businesses operate, and the building itself is also for sale, having been on the market since January 1999. The entire building consists of six apartments above four street level storefronts. Gordon's Shoe Store opened in 1975 as the Hampton Bootery before receiving its present name. The Gordons bought the building in 1981. (An article about all this appears on p.1 of the Atlantic News for August 26, 1999 .)
New name for the restaurant in Lamie's Inn and Tavern
In the summer of 1999 the restaurant in Lamie's Inn and Tavern was renovated and changed its name to "The Cat in the Custard Cup" restaurant. More can be found in the Herald Sunday of August 8, 1999 , p.A4. It went out of business in early December 2000 (see Hampton Union , December 8, 2000, p.1. The Old Salt Restaurant opened in this spot in 2001 (see above).
McDonald's comes to downtown Hampton --
New construction began on a McDonald's Restaurant at the corner of Route One and Ann's lane in mid-July 1999 but didn't finish until May of 2000, with most of the work being done in the last two months while the site lay ignored much of the time. The McDonald's of North Hampton closed to move to this site. (An article appears in the Hampton Union of July 30, 1999, p.1.)
Eatery, Courtyard, Sal & Anthony's
The "Eatery" Restaurant located behind the Inn of Hampton for the past 18 years by the Harrington family, closed the weekend of October 24-25, 1998. ( Hampton Union , October 23, 1998, p.3) The Courtyard Restaurant and Tavern opened up in the same spot, 815 Lafayette Rd., in April/May 1999. ( Atlantic News , May 6, 1999, p.6) In 2002 a new restaurant moved in called Sal & Anthony's Ristorante . They closed around June of 2004 and the original "Eatery" owned by the Harrington's is scheduled to reopen in this location at the end of September 2004.
Joe's New York Style Pizza & Brew
"Joe's New York Style Pizza & Brew" opened at 888 Lafayette Rd., former site of a used car dealership, in October 1998. (See the article in the Atlantic News of October 29, 1998, p. 1A.)
White Daffodil Gift Shop
The White Daffodil gift shop opened in Depot Square around October 1998, owned by Katherine Kerr. (An article appears in the Atlantic News of October 8, 1998, p. 7.)
Funny Bones Toys
Funny Bones Toys was opened in August 1998 at 441 Lafayette Rd. by owner David Schwab. Their September Grand Opening was covered by the Atlantic News , on October 1, 1998. This location was the former home of Seacoast Florist from about 1981 to 1993. The Easter Seal Society made its home there in 1994, Sunshine Videos in 1995-96, and Squirts CDs in 1997.
Wicked Awesome Wallpaper and Paint
Wicked Awesome Wallpaper and Paint recently moved from Stoneleigh Park in North Hampton to its new location across from Newicks on Rte 1. Jack Boland, owner, bought the building that was formerly occupied by Rogers Ski Shop. Before that it was the Ski Shed for many years. Wicked Awesome opened there in the summer of 1998. (See the Atlantic News for September 17, 1998, p.1A. and March 21, 2002 .)
Centre School addition
Work started on an addition to Centre School in June or July of 1998. It was opened in November 1999.
Partridge House, the Seacoast Health Center Alzheimer's facility
Between April 1998 and April 1999 the Seacoast Health Center was constructing a new state of the art medical facility for treating the victims of Alzheimer's disease, going in where a vacant lot and old gas station stood, on Lafayette Rd. next to the Health Center. It is three stories, 41,000 square feet, and has 60 beds. Seacoast Health Center is a 117 bed skilled nursing facility owned and operated by three generations of the Trahan family. The new facility will be named Partridge House, in honor of the Partridge family who donated the land for the original site in the early 60s. In addition to offering specialized care for Alzheimer's patients, Partridge House will feature several amenities and services including adult day care, a state-of-the-art security system, a pool, Jacuzzi, a library, a salon, a fitness room, several activity and common areas, as well as gardens, walking paths, multiple dining areas, and a five star chef. Partridge House had its grand opening on May 1-2, 1999. (A special supplement appeared in the Hampton Union of April 27, 1999. More can be found in the Hampton Union of September 18, 1998, p.1.) The Bailey Medical Building
May 1998: Exeter Hospital is pushing to construct a medical office complex at the site of the old Greenery just south of the bridge from North Hampton at 879 Lafayette Rd. Construction began in August 1998 and the site opened in the Spring or Summer of 1999. Core Medical Services moved into the building. Operated by the Exeter Health Resources, Inc. and named The Bailey Medical Building , for long time Hampton physician, Charles Brickett Bailey (also called HamptonHealth). In August 1999 a second large building was constructed on the northern side of the lot adjacent to the Seacoast Federal Credit Union property at 881 Lafayette Road (See Crust & Crumb Bakery and Café article above).
Inn of Hampton Conference Center
In May of 1998 a new conference center was set to open behind the Inn of Hampton at 815 Lafayette Rd. The May 6, 1999 Atlantic News , p.6 has this to say: "the Inn of Hampton & Conference Center features 71 rooms and suites, a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool and Jacuzzi, and game room."
New Medical Office Building, 55 High Street
In April-May 1998 approval was given for construction of a three-story medical office building at 55 High Street, in place of the old bank drive-up area. Local skateboarders will be disappointed because they have been playing there . Work started on site in June 1998 and building construction began in October. It was completed in June-July of 1999. Owned and operated by Portsmouth Regional South. Hampton Internal Medicine is one of the practices that opened there.
New Town Offices and Citizens Bank
At the 1998 Town Meeting the town purchased the Citizen's Bank building at 100 Winnacunnet Road next door to the library. In April 1998 the Recreation Department moved over there. On May 8, 1999 Citizens Bank moved into its new quarters in a newly constructed building at 35 Winnacunnet Rd., opening on May 10th. In the summer of 1999 construction of an elevator and renovation of the interior was ongoing. The town offices were moved to their new location in November 1999. The old Town Office building remained vacant for more than a decade, used only occasionally for training purposes by the Fire Department. In September of 2011 the building was finally torn down .
Burger King and the Movie Gallery
A Burger King restaurant and Movie Gallery video rental store opened at 603 and 597 Lafayette Road in mid-August 1998. Construction has been ongoing since April. The Atlantic News has an article about Planning Board approval of these businesses in its November 26, 1997 issue. This was formerly the site of the Nifty Fifties Restaurant, which burned to the ground sending its owner to prison for arson.
Top Shop Beauty Shop to Raylene's Backstage Salon
In August or September 1997 the Top Shop Beauty Shop, 471 Lafayette Rd., went out of business. It later reopened as Raylene's Backstage Salon. Raylene's closed its doors in November 2000 and relocated to 137 Lafayette Rd. in Hampton Falls as Salon 41/Gina's (see Hampton Union , Dec. 5, 2000, p.A12 and December 12, 2000 p.A15). A cyber cafe opened in its place (see above)
Zesto Pizza, 19 High St.
Zesto Pizza opened at 19 High St. on September 9, 1997. It was owned and operated by two brothers, John and Dimitrios Gioldasis, both natives of Haverhill. This was covered in a Hampton Union article on September 12, 1997, p.3. Prior to Zesto Pizza this location housed a pet grooming shop.
"Downtown spot spells doom for business?"
This was the headline of an article in the Hampton Union on November 3, 1998, p.5, as it chronicled the history of the 8 High St. location where a number of businesses began and soon closed. This trend continued after the article was written. In 1990 Brandano's Deli opened there, followed by Brandano's Trattoria Italian restaurant, then by Brandano's southwest cuisine "La Bomba" restaurant. The "La Bomba" went out of business in the summer of 1997 and reopened as the Crazy Cat Café, a coffee shop/jazz and blues club/restaurant. This lasted approximately three months and was replaced by the present (July 1999) restaurant called the Atlantic Grill and owned by Josh Bellman, (owner of JB's Bagel Co., in North Hampton, which itself went out of business in July 1999 (see Hampton Union , July 30, 1999).
Hampton Village Hardware to Hampton Center Hardware
In August 1997 Hampton Village Hardware went out of business. It reopened in early 1998 as Hampton Center Hardware. On April 13, 2001 its ownership changed hands from Keith Prince to Daniel and Sunny Goodwin of Marblehead, Mass. (See article in Hampton Union , May 1, 2001, p.B3 for details.)
