HAMPTON — More than 300 relatives and friends congratulated Mr. and Mrs. William Elliot of 48 Dearborn Avenue on their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house at the Hampton United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Elliot, former Alzena Leavitt and Mr. Elliot, who is known to many in the area as Hampton Beach's "Singing Cop," were married on June 8. 1927, at an outdoor ceremony at Mrs. Elliot's home, the "Willows", North Beach. They have made their home in Hampton since.
Several members of the original wedding party were on hand for the celebration: Neil Colwell of Massachusetts, usher; M. Elliot Noyes of Long Island, N.Y., train bearer; Richard Palmer, ring bearer; Marion Ingham Drummond of Hampton and Dorothy Carter Collins of Rochester, ribbon bearers; and Annie Elliot of Augusta, Maine, and Florida, pianist.
During the afternoon a short program was presented to honor the couple. Acting as master of ceremonies was Wayne I. Elliot of North Hampton, their son. He introduced a long-time friend, Stanley Bednarz, director of the bands at Winnacunnet High School and Hampton Beach, who supplied the music throughout the afternoon.
Dr. and Mrs. John McGinnis of Massachusetts and Hampton Beach, sang three songs in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Elliot.
A slide program was presented by Wayne Elliot. The slides took Mr. and Mrs. Elliot back to their courting days up to the present time. Many of Mr. Elliot's poems which he had written for radio broadcasts and some of his songs via records and tapes were incorporated on behalf of the family by Mrs. Cindy Arlington, the eldest grandchild; Mrs. Holly Knowles, daughter, and Mrs. June Chevalier, daughter. A money tree was also a gift of many friends.
Larry Knowles and Richard Chevalier, son-in-law, presented Mr. Elliot with the first original "Singing Cop" T-shirt.
Alice Cooke, George Cooke, Richard Dunphy and Charles Arlington were in charge of the guest book. Terry Dunphy and Cindy Arlington cut the cake and Lacie Chevalier and Priscilla Sawyer served it. Assisting with the pictures were Paul St. Martin and Richard Dunphy. The buffet which was served throughout the afternoon was presented by the United Methodist Women. Candy was given by a long time friend of the family, Mrs. Margaret Junkins of Hampton Beach.
The couple was also honored by a reception at the United Methodist Church, Hampton, and by the local Senior Citizens group.
