“Internationally Known Silhouette Artist”
1900 — 1997
In the 1946 Hampton town directory there is a quarter page ad for Lillian G. Clarke (Mrs. Lillian G. C. MacConnell), who calls herself an “Internationally Known Silhouette Artist” who had done thirteen seasons (years) at Hampton Beach. Other info on the ad is: “Specializing in Annual Repeat Silhouettes of Children and Adults”, “Jeweler and Designer–Former Jewelry Instructor New Hampshire League of Arts and Crafts”, Summer Residence: 2 Brown Ave, Hampton Beach; Winter Address: 434 Mt. Vernon St., Dedham, Mass.
In the Business Directory section of the directory she is listed under Artists and under Silhouettes with an address of 169 Ocean Blvd., which is the address of the Hampton Beach Casino where she operated her shop.
By the time the next directory came out in 1949 the listing was under Mrs. Lillian C. M. Bunker, her name after having married John P. Bunker. The address is still 169 Ocean Blvd in the listing. There is no ad this year, just the business directory listing.
Lillian was born in Boston, Mass. in 1900 and died in 1997. While in high school, she took lessons at the Boston Museum School. After high school she went there for 4 years and majored in jewelry. She worked as a jewelry designer and then branched off into Silhouettes, first working briefly in Hyannis and the next year moving to Hampton Beach.
Her daughter Joy Anne MacConnell of Barnstable, Mass. carries on the family profession.
