HAMPTON — Roger A. Syphers, 81, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015, at his home.

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., June 12, 1933, he was a son of the late Theohilus and Eleanor L. (McNabb) Syphers. He was a 1953 graduate of Portsmouth High School and served as a boiler tender 2nd class with the US Coast Guard from 1953 to 1957.

Roger owned and operated the Syphers Monument Company in Hampton working many years with his close friend Glen Simmons. He was also a former driver's education instructor at Winnacunnet High School and director of the Hampton Recreation Department.

Roger was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hampton and of the choir. He was also a member of Saint James Lodge #102 F&AM and Hampton's American Legion Post 35. He loved playing basketball and was a faithful Patriots fan. Roger had a true passionate love for people.

Family members include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Kalashian) Syphers of Hampton; two sons, Roger C. Syphers of Hampton and Richard Syphers and his wife, Janice of Amesbury, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Syphers and his wife, Emily of Burbank, Calif., and Bruce Syphers of Greenland, N.H.; two sisters, Zoe Ann Moulton and her husband, Les of Wells, Maine, and Priscilla Zoffoi and her companion, Dennis Vickery of Stratham, N.H.; a sister in-law Bonnie Syphers of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren, Ashleigh E. Syphers of Amesbury, Mass., Madison E. Syphers of Hampton, Nicole Gikas and her husband, Van of Peabody, Mass., and Jason Austin of Peabody, Mass. six beloved great grandchildren, Achilles and Elani Gikas and Blake, Mason, Ellis and Jayden Austin all of Peabody, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his brother Richard Syphers formerly of Manchester, N.H.

Family and friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton, with American Legion services at 5:45 p.m. followed by Masonic services at 6 p.m.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Hampton. Burial will be in the High Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, N.H. 03842.
