HAMPTON -- A boiler blew at Foss Manufacturing Company LLC Friday night, causing numerous people to call the Hampton Fire Department to inquire about a loud bang.

"Three quarters of the town heard it," said Fire Chief Hank Lipe. Firefighters investigated the cause and the phone calls started coming into the station from residents of the surrounding neighborhoods.

No one was hurt and only a "skeleton crew" was on staff at Foss when the boiler blew around 5:45 p.m. Friday, Lipe said. There was no evacuation. Workers were trying to re-light the boiler that fires the oven which caught fire on Thursday afternoon, he said.

"The side of the boiler blew out," Lipe said.

The boiler is larger than residential size, he said. It's about the size of ones used in schools. Lipe said he believed the boiler was natural gas.

The accident caused damage to the outside smoke stack, he said.

On Thursday at 12:53 p.m., firefighters went to Foss for a fire in the oven used to coat fabrics. Flames spread into duct work igniting residual fibers there, according to the fire report. The building was evacuated and two employees were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The fire was quickly brought under control. Firefighters cleared the scene by 4:15 p.m.
