Far out off the Seacoast, stretching from Rockport Massachusetts to Cape Elizabeth Maine is Jeffery’s Ledge. This 33 mile long formation is a huge glacial deposit, left behind when the last glaciers retreated from New England ten thousand years ago.

The ledge causes nutrient-rich water currents to rise from the bottom, which encourage the growth of phytoplankton, microscopic free-floating marine plants. In turn, the phytoplankton are eaten by animals further up the food chain, from crustaceans to fish, to whales.

As a result, Jeffery’s Ledge is teeming with marine life of every sort, which in turn draws fishermen out to fish in these waters.
