This season introduced newcomers Daniel Ades and delighiful character actress Betty Fromen Bright to Hampton audiences. Betty had a very distinctive vocal quality and a flair for comedy, and was the hit of several shows, It was at The Hampton Playhouse that David Christian and Katherine Helmond met, dated, fell in love and eventually got married. David has since become a very talented sculptor with exibitions in NY and on the west coast. Adrian Hall, who later bacame managing director of Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, RI for many years, directed several productions for the company over the next few years. One of his first was LADIES NIGHT ... and he made the statement that he would have to hide on opening night as it was sure to be a bomb. He nearly collapsed when the audience began to howl at all of the ridiculous antics. Doug Rowe had to substitute as Stage Manager when Freddie Hoskins was suddenly cast in a show because of a new Equity ruling that a Stage Manager can not be acting in the same production, THE MIRACLE WORKER was a brilliant production, highlighted by the terrific fight at the dinner table between characters Annie Sullivan, played by Katherine Helmond, and Helen Keller, played by Beth McGovern. Even though this scene was carefully choreographed and the actresses wore knee pads, they both managed to sustain a bevy of bruises ... true suffering for their art. Ralph Barbagallo, Jr. again played drums this season. Apprentices and local personages appearing in productions that season included Sue Hesse, Eric Shugaar, Tom Moody, Beth McGovern (Helen Keller in THE MIRACLE WORKER), Jeffrey Blake, Ed Witherell, Fran Isbel, Susan Christie, Pat O'Riordan, Burleigh Booker, and David Christian. Sue played Nellie in SOUTH PACIFIC opposite Denny Drew.
