Weston Gallery - Ethel Hills, November 2019

Ethel Hills - An artist's journey

Exhibit
November 2 - 27

Reception
Tuesday, November 19th at 6:30 PM

In Search of HomeEthel Hills grew up in rural Hollis, New Hampshire amidst farms, apple orchards, hayfields and woods. After high school, she attended Dickinson College for two years before taking some time off. During this break in her schooling, she explored black and white photography, primarily the natural forms in the landscape around her parents’ home in Hollis. She briefly toyed with the idea of returning to school to learn more about photography, but panicked when she found out that meant art school.

Instead, she enrolled at the University of New Hampshire to complete her BA. While at UNH, she fell in love with the seacoast area, the beaches, the rocks, the marshes, and the solitude of the area in the off season. After graduating, she moved to Hampton, eventually settling next to the salt marsh.

Shortly after moving to Hampton, she took up traditional rug hooking. As she learned more and more about rug hooking, she wanted her rugs to become more her own creation. Although she learned to plan her own colors and dye her own wool, she was still working with commercial patterns. It was her pursuit of more personal and creative hooked pieces which brought her to her love of art. Her goal was simple, to learn just enough drawing to be able to produce the very simple line drawings that are the basis of rug designs.

One thing led to another, first a couple of books on drawing, then a drawing class at a high school, then a watercolor class, then a workshop and on and on. There was always something new to learn. After getting a feel for watercolor, the next step was to strengthen her drawing skills. She went back to UNH, only this time studying in the Art Department. She’s worked hard to develop her skills by taking traditional classes at both UNH and the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and also by studying with well-known watercolor artists and teachers, Dustan Knight, Don Andrews, DeWitt Hardy, Ed Betts, Skip Lawrence, and Gerry Brommer.

Hills came to art later in life and through a circuitous route, but has no regrets about it. She has been painting seriously for almost twenty years and is currently pursuing her art career from her small studio in downtown Hampton. She is an active member of the Ogunquit Artist Association, Abstract Artists’ Group of New England, Women’s Caucus for Art, Arts League of Lowell and the New Hampshire Art Association. She has exhibited in numerous juried, group and solo shows in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine. She is represented by Paula Estey Gallery in Newburyport, MA.

"Hampton Beach in the 1980s" Photo Exhibit by Peter Randall

Peter Randall "Hampton in the 1980s"

Sand and surf. Babies and bikinis. Taffy and dough. Arcade and boardwalk. All offered subjects for Peter E. Randall and his small camera as he wandered Hampton Beach in the summer of 1983. Hundreds of images were edited to about 80 never before seen photographs. Here are people of all ages enjoying New Hampshire’s largest tourist community.

Randall’s pursuit of beach, boardwalk, arcade, and street photographs began when he asked Agfa to send him some test rolls of their new black and white chromogenic film thathe could use in a documentary project. Fine grained with wide latitude for recording both shadows and highlights, the film was processed by machine like a roll of color print film.

Agfa responded with 20 rolls, which he used in a small camera he could carry in his pocket. Since he lived in Hampton he could visit the beach easily anytime of the day, or day of the week. Street photographers don’t use long lenses to isolate their subjects. His little camera had a moderate wide-angle lens that required him to get relatively close to his subjects. He was rarely noticed by anyone as he photographed and was never told by anyone not to make an image.

During this period, he was starting Peter E. Randall Publisher, and working on several book projects. The Hampton Beach film was processed and filed away, forgotten due to the pressure of more immediate issue. He has been archiving his work and these images caught his attention. He had never looked at them in detail until recently. These 35-year old photographs capture a point in time. Perhaps some of his subjects will recognize themselves and remember happy days at Hampton Beach.

Hampton Beach in the 1980s will be on exhibit in the downstairs Weston Gallery throughout the month of July, 2019.  A special reception for Peter will be held on Tuesday, July 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.  All are invited to attend.

About the Photographer

Peter E. Randall has been photographing professionally since 1963. His photographic travels have taken him to five African countries, Guatemala, Spain, Japan, and New Zealand. He has produced two books of photographs on the Isles of Shoals, where he has photographed since the mid-1970s. He has served as editor of The Hampton Union and New Hampshire Profiles magazine. He founded Peter E. Randall Publisher and produced some 450 titles of local history, poetry, fiction, memoirs, art, and photography. The author of thirteen books of history, photography, and travel, he wrote Hampton, A Century of Town and Beach, 1888-1988.  In retirement he made Celia Thaxter’s Island Garden, a film that has been shown on public television. Born in Seabrook and raised in Hampton Falls, he was a thirty-year resident of Hampton. He and his wife now reside in Eliot, Maine.

Mural Unveiling on July 12, 2019

Mural Dedication

On Friday, July 12th beginning at 1:30 PM everyone is invited to drop by the library to see our new stairway mural created by artist Kit Collins, standing here with Library director Amanda Reynolds Cooper. The Friends of Lane Memorial Library commissioned this colorful new addition to the library, and we would like to celebrate her accomplishment.  We will serve light refreshments and visitors will have a chance to meet Kit and hear about her work and the story she’s created.

Amanda Reynolds Cooper and Kit CollinsThe mural has been months in the making. Kit was tasked with drafting up three different mural designs on which the Hampton community voted in person and through the library website. The three themes were "Wide World of Books", "Local, Gone Global", and "New Hampshire Nature". New Hampshire Nature was voted as the top pick and features a variety of wildlife and scenery that can be found in and around Hampton and New Hampshire. It’s playful and imaginative, with bobcats reading to their kits, an octopus flipping through an underwater novel, and more.

Starting at 2:00 PM, the Library will also be holding a Community Art Project. Just for fun, families will get to splatter, swirl and splash together a universe of color on a massive, parking-lot size roll of paper.

"Saga of the Submarine Squalus" - May 28, 6:30 PM

The submarine Squalus

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the saga of the Squalus, a submarine built at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, which sank during it’s 19th test dive on May 23, 1939, six miles southeast of the Isles of Shoals.

During the dive, the main induction valve failed to close, and water rushed into the submarine, flooding the aft compartment.  Submerged in 240 feet of water, 33 of its 59 crew members were rescued.  It was the greatest submarine rescue in the history of the United States Navy.

To commemorate the anniversary, Karen Raynes and Mike Garland have researched and produced a documentary, “Saga of the Submarine Squalus,” that will be shown Monday, May 27, at 1 p.m., at the American Legion Post #35, 69 High Street in Hampton, and Tuesday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m., at the Lane Memorial Library.  The documentary tells the story of the rescue, salvage and rebirth of the Squalus.  The screenings are free and all are welcome to attend.

An exhibit about the Squalus is on display at the Tuck Museum of Hampton History, 40 Park Avenue in Hampton.  The museum is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, 1-4 p.m.

November 10 will be Squalus Sunday at the Tuck Museum when the documentary will be shown at 2 p.m., followed by a discussion hosted by Raynes and Garland about the making of the “Saga of the Submarine Squalus.”

Seacoast Open Studio - Weston Gallery, May 2010

Seacoast Open Studio

This month the library welcomes 11 artists from the Seacoast Open Studio who will be exhibiting their work in the Weston Gallery during the months of May and June.  They will welcome guests and patrons at a reception on the evening of May 21 at 6:30 PM.  We asked them to share a bit about who they are and why they come together:

"Seacoast Open Studio (SOS) is an eclectic group of visual artists from the Seacoast NH area that has been meeting weekly for the last nine years in Exeter, NH.  We get together September through June on Friday mornings, 9:30-noon, upstairs at the historic Exeter Parks and Recreation Building to create art and share ideas, critiques, and inspiration.

Our styles range from wild abstracts to the more traditional.  The mediums and subjects are diverse; even the size of our works stretch from miniature to murals.

Venues where the SOS exhibits includes local libraries, D Squared Java, Exeter Hospital, the Provident Bank, Blue Moon Evolution, and Exeter Old Town Hall.

Our open and supportive group enjoys welcoming newcomers."
