"Make Art Work" - Emily Kalina reception and talk

Emily Kalina - Make Art Work

Plan to drop in at the library on Saturday, August 18th at 2:00 PM in the downstairs Lane Room to meet local artist Emily Kalina and learn about her experiences in making a living in the art world.  As she describes it, "To make art that sells in the world today, you have to wear many hats. One is the creator, the artist. But the artist needs to not only create the artwork, but also sell and market, while simultaneously promoting it on social media as well as managing a website where people can find your work.  If it seems like a lot, it is! However it can be done. Come join me to talk about what it means to make art work."  Some of Emily's work will also be on display in our Weston Gallery for the month of August, including digital prints on canvas, a selection of patterned scarves, and a handbag.

Emily graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2003 with a degree in Illustration and immediately entered the gallery world in which she exhibited and sold her signature style of layered, textured, and patterned watercolors. As a young watercolor artist Kalina always had an eye for the interplay of color, texture and layering. This innate skill quickly evolved and expanded as in 2009 as she left the gallery world to pursue the exciting world of print and textile design. Using her watercolors as a basis for her prints, she combines her sharp eye for trends with an innate sense of color and style to produce vibrant designs that are appealing to a wide variety of clientele.

Kalina successfully transformed her 14 years of layered and textured watercolors into best selling scarves and a variety of products for Nine West Dress, Michael Kors, Barney’s New York, Nordstrom, Anthropologie, Elie Tahari, Nordstrom, Target and TJX to name a few.

"Turning 60 in Tuscany" - Photographs of Debra Woodward

Turning 60 in Tuscany

My husband and I decided to each choose a place that we wanted to experience for the first time when we turned 60.  I had always wanted to drink in the landscapes, traditions, history, art, food and wine of Tuscany.  From the kitchen where we took cooking lessons to the rooftops of Siena it was the perfect place to photograph.  My husband chose Provence, where we reveled in the luscious food, fields of lavender and street musicians of Avignon.

Debra WoodwardA NH native, Debra Woodward has been interested in creative photography since she was a child with her first Brownie camera.  In 2009, she began six years studying with Newburyport photographer Robert Chiller with a goal to master her SLR and grow from taking snapshots to learning what makes a good photograph.  She began to understand the importance of shadows and light and of working to get a good shot from the outset, without depending on a lot of post manipulation.  Debra enjoys street shooting as well as capturing subjects as diverse as musicians at work, café goers, and horses jumping in the snow.

In 2017 Debra shared a successful show entitled “Café Life” with NH oil painter Peg Murray at the NH Art Association; Debra’s dramatic black and white photographs were a fine contrast and complement to Peggy’s colorful oil paintings.  “Escargot” was the centerpiece of her part of this show, and it is exhibited here.  This followed her solo show entitled “Tuscan Laundry” and some of these photos are also displayed here. Two others can currently be seen in the “Eye of the Beholder” show at the Seacoast Artists Association in Exeter with interpretations of these photos in oil by award-winning Amesbury painter Bob Richardson, whose work was just seen here at the Weston Gallery in May. Debra began studying oil painting with Mr. Richardson in 2017 and exhibited paintings for the first time in his recent show.  Expect to see more from Debra in oils!

Debra is a member of the Seacoast Artist Association in Exeter and the Newburyport Art Association. She is also a juried member of the NH Art Association and a former board member. Last month her photograph “Becoming Icarus” was accepted into their 32nd Annual Omer T. Lassonde Juried Exhibition and can be seen here.  Her work has been accepted into the NHAA’s Annual Parfitt Photography Exhibition for the past several years and their 29th Annual Omer T. Lassonde Open Juried Exhibition in 2015.  She was also part of the 2013 and 2015 annual Joan L. Dunfey Memorial Juried Exhibitions, and this past November her photograph “Escargot”, seen here in this show, won Honorable Mention.  In 2014 her photo “Purple Blanket” was awarded Best in Photography at the Newburyport Art Association Winter Juried Exhibition, Part 1.

Turning 60 in Tuscany will be on exhibit in the downstairs Weston Gallery throughout the month of June, 2018.  Debra would like to invite everyone to her reception on Tuesday, June 19th at 6:30 PM for pizza and conversation!

July Event - Strategic Thinking - Vision Statement

Vision statements answer, “What is your dream?” no matter its size or indistinctness. A vision statement will help participants to identify their mission statement, which is how they will reach their dream. Finally, the last step will be about identifying the objectives and actions needed to achieve that dream, with each participant creating a Foot Print. "Walking Home" library performance May 25th at 3:00 PM

Walking Home

"Living in northern Massachusetts, we (Ryan Brown and Chris Yates) travel 40 miles and cross two state lines every day just to arrive at Berwick Academy. Therefore, we decided to use the opportunity of a Senior Project to explore the towns and communities we pass by every day on our way to school. So we thought how about we just walk home, which is why we’ve decided to call this project Walking Home. The plan is to, quite literally, walk from campus to our houses in Massachusetts with our friend Gil Hamel, another alumnus of Berwick, stopping along the way to volunteer in the surrounding communities. We are also performing music wherever we stop, either at venues or busking."

Ryan, Chris and Gill describe their music as a mix of folk, country, and Celtic tunes.  More information about the trio and their project is available on their website here.

Bob Richardson Gallery and Art Talks

Bob Richardson lectures

Bob RichardsonDuring the month of May, we are pleased to welcome local artist and teacher Bob Richardson and several of his students to the Weston Gallery.  Works on dislpay include oil paintings created plein air at locations such as Quebec City and Monhegan Island, as well as student works showing both art in progress and the finished composition. For those who would like to know more about how these works are created, Bob will present two lectures on the artistic process free of charge in our downstairs Lane Room.  The first is How To : From Sketch to Oil Painting on Saturday, May 12th and How To : Oil Painting from Photographs on Saturday, May 26th, both at 1:00 PM.  Bob and his students will also be on hand to meet members of the public at an artist reception on Tuesday, May 15th at 6:30 PM.

Bob Richardson paints to capture a moment or a place with the intention of imprinting his feelings for that place or moment. Through the use of Cezanne’s limited palette of eight colors, Richardson’s paintings are rich with color, space, light, and bold lines. Richardson worked for 20 years in creative product development, traveled extensively in Europe and Asia throughout his professional career in pursuit of the old and the new, lost and forgotten decorative arts manufacturing processes. Richardson taught painting at the Doylestown Community Conservatory School of Music, Arts, and Drama. He now teaches oil painting classes designed to help the serious beginner get started or for those artists looking for a new direction and approach to their art.

Bob lives in Amesbury with his wife Bernice and is a member of the NAA, the New Hampshire Seacoast Artist Association, the Exeter Arts Committee and the Exeter Seacoast Open Studio. In 2005 Richard received the Best Of Show Award at the 37th annual Gallery in the Park Festival, PA as well as the Walter Emerson Baum Award in both 2005 and 2015.

Make Time to Read - with prizes!

Make Time To Read

As we begin our final month of winter in New England, the staff at the Lane Memorial Library would like to offer our patrons the chance to warm up with a free coffee at the Depot Café.  Is there a catch?  Of course there is, but it’s a great catch.  Adults and teens who read four books between February 20th and March 20th, 2018 can visit the library, fill out a prize card, and then redeem it at the Depot Café for one of their wonderful coffee creations.  For younger readers, the library staff encourages families and children to read together 20 minutes on 4 different days, and the prize will be a cute “I love to read” bracelet that children will receive from staff in the Children’s Room. Depot Cafe
Amanda, Kathy, Paulina

In a recent interview with Depot Cafe owner Kathy Faulkingham and children's librarian Paulina Shadowens, director Amanda Reynolds Cooper expressed how excited she is for the library to host this first-of-its-kind winter reading program.  “We love to see new and familiar faces at our door, and the staff is always happy to help someone find a good book if they’re stumped.  We can find anyone four fantastic books to fill that prize card and get their coffee treat.”  Noting that setting time aside to read even in the 'slower' winter months often requires a deliberate choice, she concluded “I hope that people take 20 minutes for themselves – get the blanket, get the pillow, get snuggy and grab a book.  If you would rather be tucked in and reading a book, make that choice and leave some of the other things behind for a while.”

Prize cards for adults, teens and children will be available at the library beginning on February 20th, 2018 and will remain vaild until March 21st, 2018.
